Youtube Gore Videos

Oliver is demanding (or crying) that the US release those pictures, I wonder if he's going to be consistent with his views on censorship.

There was a big hub-bub a few years ago about YouTube being too tight on its cencorship of violent acts. Specifically, clips of protestors being harmed in Iran. YouTube was removing these videos and it caused the younger internet crowds to cry foul. Some reviews of their policies were done and it was decided violent and disturbing imagery would be allowed if it served political or educational purposes to some degree. I think they still try and remove graphic and detailed deaths, but occassionally something can be approved. Hence few military videos showing death, but occassionally you can find graphic beat downs.

As to the "moral outrage" crowd... they do complain. Vocally and often. However YouTube and the internet in general are not subject to as strict set of rules as their usual victims. The "moral outrage" crowd is and always has been in the minority. They are just very vocal. Unlike a brick and mortar store, on the internet the people who do not want censorship can easily move on. YouTube is about the level of censorship Americans want in general. The less censored stuff can be found elsewhere when it is wanted, but the general traffic can be safe in not seeing murders or penises on YouTube. Outside of public broadcasting, radio or TV, most of the cencorship seen is self-cencorship by the private media companies.

YouTube has a policy against excessive gore. The reason you encountered those videos is because nobody had reported them yet, simple as that. YouTube cannot review every single video that is uploaded.

Yes. I also do not think Autopsy videos would normally count against their terms of service unless many people complained about them. A general rule of thumb is if you can see it on regular cable television channels it is probably allowable on YouTube.

That is pretty much what their censorship review process comes down to. Are enough people complaining? Is it illegal and been brought to their attention? Yes to either it gets removed.

I'm not a huge fan of gore, but I have seen a few autopsy videos on YouTube. They're clearly not there for the gore factor, but rather for educational use - at least the ones I've seen.

Just watched a clip about a naked women getting autopsied and "emptied" in every little detail including the brain - and another one where someones leg is being amputated - the clips didn't even have the usual "age verification" or warning, so what's up with all the gore - and why isn't a Family-Association or the Bible-Belt going ballistic about this [as they usually would]?

Medical/educational videos are not gratuitous, or sexual. There are boobs on the Nat Geo channel all the time, that doesn't make it porn.
