Benefits need to be reduced because they haven't been paid for. If SS taxes had been set aside, general income taxes would have had to be higher. So everyone expecting their benefits now already benefited by having lower taxes throughout their career.
No, we didn't. We had to pay more FICA and other withholding taxes and higher whatever-the-jelly-brain-from-California-dumped-on-us taxes.
And a lot of us wound up out of work as the rich stuck more of the fat of the land in their tucker bags and headed for China to find cheaper labor.
Most of the tax cuts went to people who were already well over the level at which payroll taxes go away.
