When I first started playing chess for my school, I studied his early matches and was in awe of his strategy. Later, I learned what a loon he was in his non-chess life.

Still, one of the greatest chess players of all time.

Thanks for the news, I had not heard.

My first knowledge of chess master came through the movie Searching for Bobby Fischer, which he apparently denounced as a Jewish conspiracy to slander him and make money from him. Interesting in that I actually learned about him, and thought him a unique individual because of the movie.

It's like when Joe DiMaggio was going to sue Paul Simon over mentioning him in "Mrs. Robinson." They're not really saying anything bad about either of them, they are just pointing out how unique they are and how much we miss observing them.

It is really amazing how he could completely leave tournament chess behind after investing so much time to it at the cost of his education and his personal life. Some might conclude that he grew to hate chess itself but that doesn't seem to be the case. What he really seems to have tired of was tournament chess with it's rules a regulations that he claims were all geared in the Russian advantage. Some have also claimed that he feared facing Anatoly Karpov. In any case, he did come back after those many years, took on Spassky again, beat him once more and retired with the prize money. Some criticize his performance during that rematch. However, Spasky had been an active top competitor in tournament chess all those years and for Fisher t come back and win is still very impressive. But notice again that he only broke retirement when trying to impress a young lady who requested it of him. After that he once more retired this time for good.
