Yar, Ghost Ships!

I casually note with no disrespect for anyone - because it is the nature of media - most media is /are not that concerned about someone being an expert regardless of implications. What they want is someone presentable, able to speak reasonablely well in public, with an intelligent appearance (unless you are a democrat/liberal being interviewed on Faux or that fat druggies show)who knows enough about a subject that they can explain it with sufficient detail that the average audience member can understand it and will keep the channel on to watch! Media lives and dies on audience - audience is not that affected by actual level of expertise/truth and frequently does not actually want to know the truth. Or, as I tell my students in media (when I teach it): No matter how things should be, how products may be, what your ethics are or are not, the purpose of a film, a show, a department, an entertainer and anyone or anything in a media company - or, really, any company is to make money for its' owners/investors. The only exception is if the owner/ investors tell you to always put out the truth regardless of the income it brings in. Do not hold your breath waiting for that to happen.

It seems that my initial post was a bit more aggressive and accusatory that I would have liked it to be. So, I apologize for that.

I also thank the SC gang for helping me think about it some more. :)

I do wish Rebecca luck, but will add that she may need to be careful if she is representing herself as an expert. And, that's just a general caveat that can be applied to everyone.

Only rebecca can accept the apology, but with this post, I'm not having any more problems, at least.

The Teignmouth Electron is a 40-foot trimaran, now decaying on a sand dune on the island of Cayman Brac. But in its early years it had quite a history as a real-life ghost ship of sorts.

Indeed. Some of Crowhurst's real diaries were found (including the very last one), and paint sort of a horrid picture of this guy going slowly insane. His ramblings became more and more incoherent as time went on. The final entry (undated) was simply the phrase, "IT IS THE MERCY" - which, by the way, is what my sig references.

In the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, there is a display case featuring a model of the Suhaili, the boat Robin Knox-Johnston used to win the Golden Globe race. In front of the display case, there is a wooden rail that visitors often rest their hands on - most of them don't even notice (or don't think to ask about) the words "IT IS THE MERCY" carved into the surface of the rail - a tribute to Crowhurst.

For the curious, there's a photo of the railing Joshua refers to on the National Maritime Museum web site. See @tinyurl.com/3c3uvl (The forum gods still restrict my ability to post URLs in a sensible manner...but not for long.)

There is a cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in which some victims of the Titanic sinking are interred. We were able to spend only one day in Halifax when we visited Canada last year, but locals told us there are ghost stories regarding the cemetery and the Titanic passengers buried there. Sorry I don't know more specifics!
