Ed xkcd frequency [17FEB2014]

Another pedantic nitpick, apparently there is still roughly one little league player per second striking out, despite it being night throughout the US.

A definite C- must try harder.

Average frequencies.

Reading comprehension is a definite C -, must try harder.

Averaged over what period? I can't think of one which would make the statistic meaningful. It's just a pointless flashing gif.

I like xkcd a lot, but this one just strikes me as a bit lame.

If I had to guess, all of them are occurrences per year averaged over a year's time. Why make it more complicated than it needs to be? If you know how many Little League players struck out in any given year, spread them out evenly through the year and there you go.

Sure, in reality it would flash insanely fast on any given summer weekend during the day and not at all on a winter night, but that's the case for a great many statistics that are given in the "Every X seconds Y happens." form.

FWIW, the "members of the UK parliament flushing a loo" one seemed off to me, so I looked up how many members of parliament there are and the average amount of times per day the average person flushes the loo, and came up with a final figure of 3.5 seconds. So the gif is actually about right.
