Wrong door shootings.

"The fact that I'm a gun welding maniac is going to make people more violent to me, I mean that's just logical, so I'm totally justified in shooting first and asking questions never" is a bold stance.

I dunno, I increasingly think one of the best reasons to want to own a gun in the US is as a response to the types of mouth-breathing, bloodthirsty idiots that are the stereotypical American gun nut.

From the perspective of the residents, it was probably a pretty scary situation. Belligerent stranger banging on the door, breaking the glass, and reaching through to open the door and do who knows what next.

What would people in non gun toting countries do? I suspect it could easily end in serious injury or death. A stranger reaching through the door of a non-gun house could easily find themselves stabbed with a kitchen knife or bludgeoned with a heavy lamp.

It's probably not comparable with the American experience, but as an 18 year old I once woke up to the sound of someone trying to open my kitchen door (door to the outside world)...

I opened the door for him, and rage chased him down the footpath behind our flats, ending up with me shattering a broom stick over his back as he scrambled over a fence.

(No idea where the broom head went.)

I'd like to think that he re thought his career at that stage, and that he'd have a nice welt to remind him during his thinking process.

Violence begets violence. Guns beget guns. That's how America got where it is now.

Interesting. The USA does seem to be rather unique in this regard, don't you think?

I think the US probably has a somewhat unusual confluence of factors. A paranoia about crime (that well outpaces actual crime rates) and general fearfulness of strangers, which probably isn't that special to the US, combined with the unusual feature of widespread and easy access to guns. A deadly combination of fearfulness and lethal weaponry.
