Would you give Steven Purcell a job?

Thing is though that a lot of the people who might be in the position of fhiring him are quite possibly cocaine users themselves, and won't see much wrong with it so long as he can keep his act together and doesn't get a criminal record.

Who do you think might be considering hiring him, then?

Rolfe.

It's over seven years since I lived in the dear green place, so I missed all this, still it's nice to see Glasgow politics is as lively as ever.

The plan to try and cover the whole episode up and parachute him into a nice safe job does seem a bit rich. However I don't think substance abuse problems and/or mental illness should be the kiss of death to any future career, Charles Kennedy seems to have straightened up reasonably well.

How was his work on Glasgow council perceived? Good, bad or indifferent?

Charles was OK. He was pretty much of the "I won't insult your intelligence by pretending I haven't had a drink and I'm still the most successful leader you have had in 80 years".

It wasn't Purcell's peccadilloes that troubled but rather the casual ease with which the whole West of Scotland Labour Party seems to rub shoulders with gangsters and villains (and the Party's point blank refusal to investigate same).

PS - not sure I would hire him in a public office role - he undoubtedly has talents which he might well use once he sorts his issues out.

Hmmmm....

http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/...l-at-centre-of-labour-donations-row-1.1039114

Two businessmen who have given former council leader Steven Purcell a post with their charity are at the centre of a row over a £1.7 million land deal.

It emerged yesterday Allan Stewart and Stephen McKenna have given Purcell the role.

They denied this was “payback” for the council paying one of their firms for land needed for the Commonwealth Games.

However the Sunday Herald can reveal that after the council backed the deal a Stewart & McKenna company gave £5000 to the Labour party. [....]

Stephen McKenna told the Sunday Herald Purcell would not be paid for his work for the pair’s charity, the Stewart & McKenna Foundation, and denied any connection between the land deal and donations to Labour.

Steven Purcell could not be contacted yesterday.

What has that got to do with nationalism? Corrupt and incompetent politicians will exist so long as there are politicians, irrespective of the size of the political unit. In this case, the political unit was one city.

Lots of people have drug problems, but what I find surprising is how rarely you hear of politicians with these issues.
My friend who was working the 1996 Dem convention here says the place was full of cocaine FWIW.

There is a group of people you want to share resources and work with and it includes people like this. You would exclude better people, more honest people merely because they were born south of an arbitrary geographical point.

I see, you consider people from outwith Scotland to be better and more able. Very good.

Of course, with World Government these allegedly dishonest people will magically vanish.

You think Scotland is the only place where there are corrupt and incompetent Labour city councillors? Have you had a look at some of the towns and cities in England recently?

Your categorising of English politicians as "better people, more honest people" than Scots is bordering on racism.

Rolfe.

I don't think there's any "bordering" about it. The implication seems to be that we couldn't run the proverbial in a brewery if we didn't import "better" people from the South.

Who else is resisting the mention the long sleaze list of Westiminster politicians? Backhanders? Perjury? Expenses? Anyone?

No.

I want to share our resources and governance with all of you, rogues and scoundrels included. You do not want the same – you would exclude some people not based on ability, character or honesty but some ridiculous irrational notion with no merit. But at the same time include the rogues and scoundrels as long as their forefathers wore kilts.

Just pointing out how dumb it all is, carry on.

Where did I say politicians? You're reading what you want to read not what I wrote.
