One wonders whence the offence.

If a group is marginalized and thought of dismissively, then any word used to refer to them exclusively will eventually come to be thought of as derogatory.

You could just as easily as why "the N-word" is considered derogatory- it just means "black", right?

FTR, I was referring to an Indian activist who claimed that squaw = the c-word. Certainly the word could be used in a derogatory way despite having an inoffensive meaning (see boy).
