Woman's runs her self over and dies

You know, I want to point and laugh say "what a maroon" in my bugs bunny voice. But, I have a 3k+ pound SUV I drive on the weekends and more than once I thought I put it in park when I really had it in reverse. Luckily its got loads of torque and its pretty obvious its in gear once I take my foot off the brake pedal. Otherwise, I'd have done a lot of damage by now.
 
She was probably tired at the end of the day and upset because she had just hit another car (and at least she stopped to check the damage--she could have just driven off). I was going to say "Darwin award," but with the limited info available I think that's premature.
 
An old lady at my parent's church died in the church parking lot in a similar fashion. She got out and had left the car in gear or neutral, car started moving and she tried to get back in to stop it, tripped and got run over. As odd as it seems, it's apparently not that uncommon.

Yup. The article said she left the car in reverse. Ok, but she didn't realize the car was moving backwards until after she was behind it??

Lots of cars are like that, especially bigger SUV types. Put them in gear and let go of the brake and they just sit there, or barely creep forward (or backward). Saves fuel when you're sitting in traffic - not having the engine push too much against the brakes. But, once they do start moving, they can idle at a good 10+mph

It also said that she left the door open. They aren't too clear on the exacts but I gather the door knocked down and the car went over her. It's a tragic death from, apparently, a very typical mistake. I go back and forth between a manual and an automatic so I always have to pause for a second before I get out of the car. I am just waiting for that mistake to happen.
 
My neighbor was talking about his MIL today. She's in a powered scooter now and can't drive anymore... and one wonders if she ever could based on the holes in all the walls.
 
I don't think I ever leave a car engine running when I get out of the car. Maybe it's a reaction to the high levels of car theft in the UK in the 1990s but I would assume that if I exit the car, engine running, some oik will leap into the car and steal it.
