Woman paralyzed by flu shot

I think we need some more time to get a clear picture of what's actually happening in this specific example. The diagnosis is from a family doctor and he's changed his diagnosis since the news story broke. Originally he was explaining that it was pre-existing dystonia and now she's saying it's "acute, viral post immunization encephalopathy and mercury toxicity with secondary respiratory and neurological deficits" - a completely unrelated condition.
The doctor that is saying its cute, viral post immunization encephalopathy and mercury toxicity with secondary respiratory and neurological deficits is an antivaxer doctor who thinks injecting urine is fine.

Stating the obvious here: urine contains toxins.

It's important to understand that the response to vaccines are usually a mild form of what would have been the response to the illness.

If a patient gets a complication directly caused by the vaccine, it's very likely the patient would have had the same complication but worse from the illness in question.

Just as an example, GBR has a baseline rate of morbidity and mortality in the unvaccinated population because people get flu and GBR is a complication of flu. A patient can also get GBR from vaccination, but it is less likely and milder. So: if flu season is upon us, vaccine reduces the incidence of GBR, even though it can be one cause.

That is an awesome and interesting point! Any chance you have a study to back this up?? It would really shut a lot of CTers up.

The same day I got my flu shot in early September, I also took a massive dump.

Thus, flu vaccinations also double as a laxative.

Post hoc ergo propter hoc, indeed

Our findings indicate a far greater excess risk of GBS among Campylobacter enteritis patients than previously reported by retrospective serological studies.
In addition, they confirm previously suggested associations between infection due to Epstein-Barr virus infection and influenza-like illness and GBS.
Finally, we report evidence of a protective effect of influenza vaccination on GBS risk, which may be mediated through protection against influenza disease, or result from a lower likelihood of vaccination among those with recent infection. Cohort studies of GBS incidence in this population would help to clarify the burden of GBS due to influenza, and any potential protective effect of influenza vaccination.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19025491

Influenza viruses are infrequent triggering agents of GBS but may play a significant role during major influenza outbreaks. Influenza-related GBS displays specific features and is not associated with antiganglioside antibody response, which suggests the presence of underlying immune mechanisms.

If people don't get immunized, they will get GBS at a rate of 1/100 000.
Vaccinated people only get GBS at a rate of 1/1 000 000.

The vaccine does have a protective effect against GBS.

Gee, a miraculous cure and miraculous FAST recovery! How come it never works that way for all the autistic kids? Geee? Hmmmm? Autism has to do the with brain, but it's not psychosomatic. And this case and autism has nothing to do with "toxins", and even more has NOTHING to do with vaccines.

There's clearly something wrong with this woman, but my unfortunately cynical guess is that she may have had a degenerative pre-existing condition (dystonia or perhaps just somatization) with poor prognosis, and is now recasting it as a vaccine-induced injury to cash in on the hope of getting one of those multimillion-dollar settlements.

I don't normally accuse people of blatant fraud like this, but the situation does look very suspicious.

It could take years for something like this to wind through the courts.
Does her doctor explain the Hg toxicity in any way consistent with the contents of the vaccine?:D:D:confused::jaw-dropp

Thanks for the linkies, Eos ... currently in another stupid debate with an acquaintance who's using both Desiree Jennings and GBS as reasons to avoid the flu shot. The kicker? She's a PhD candidate in neurolinguistics.

*sigh*

There are always going to be very odd and very rare reactions to any vaccination. Tragic, but not cause for alarm unless lots of people are getting dystonia from the vax.
Gag..... puhleese, when there is a documented vaccine reaction, by all means let's discuss it. But when you give 90 million vaccine doses (seasonal flu vaccine doses in the US this year) or however many millions of doses (H1N1 vaccine doses distributed so far in the US) to a population, you are going to see coincidental events. One case of dystonia after a vaccination when millions of doses have already been distributed? No way that is vaccine related or if by some most remote extreme chance it was, it would be totally irrelevant. One case in millions of doses? How unremarkable!

PS: I know that isn't how you meant to word your post. But I get to blame Lisa as an official rule around here. ;) :lfault :lfault2

I think you might find its slightly more complex than that, but in short your point is basically correct, but for live vaccines only.
I also guess you mean GBS and not GBR?

... my point stands. There will always be odd and rare reactions to any drug.
...and, there always have been and always will be (in the foreseeable future) false claims of coincidental occurrences which are then erroneously attributed to vaccines.
