Documents and audio recordings released yesterday by One Wisconsin Now document an apparent plot by the Wisconsin Republican Party, Koch-funded Americans for Prosperity (aka Fight Back Wisconsin), and various other tea party groups to suppress votes from minorities and students in this year’s elections using a well-documented — and illegal— practice known as “voter caging.” The alleged plot offers fresh evidence that long-discredited right-wing conspiracy theories about massive voter fraud supposedly perpetrated by minorities and others remain alive and well in both the official GOP establishment and its tea party base.

“Voter caging” is a means of voter suppression and intimidation that involves sending mail to a list of voters, compiling a list of mail pieces returned as undeliverable, and then challenging those voters at the polls or otherwise attempting to remove them from the voter rolls. The mere process of challenging voters can intimidate from voting even if they are eligible, cause long lines to form at polling places that will then discourage others from voting, and may result in eligible voters casting provisional ballots which stand a high likelihood of not being counted in the final tally.

Meet the new GOP, same as the old GOP.
Expect much, much more of this as the years go by and the country demographically shifts away from being favorable towards traditional Republican candidates and platforms.

Right, the Dems would never, ever cage!

Of course not. We're usually too busy trying to get people to actually register and vote.

Just the face-time with people that this requires increases the vote for Democrats. People are more likely to vote for candidates who at least appear to give a rat's about them.

Yer know.... OK, I'll just say this straight out.

If you had a non-partisan voter registration system and compulsory voting, no political party would be able to pull any stunts to force or prevent anyone from voting. People will have to vote regardless. So that prevents caging or any other manipulation of voter turnout.

Then the parties would have to concentrate on winning the voters by rhetoric and politics and stuff, not dirty polling tricks. ;)

Agree aout Non Partisan voting registration, but am violently opposed to Mandatory voting. Please explain why having masses of people who really dont' care about politics having to vote will insure anything except some really bad decisions through ignorance.

Voting in my state is much easier. Show up to a polling station (any polling station) and pick a name off a list. You can then vote as that person!

I concur. Especially because I have helped win elections for "dark horse" candidates with really well organized Get Out The Vote efforts.

We would go to nursing homes and pick up those unable to get out to the polls on their own, and would even drive GOP voters to the polls if they wanted to come along. Many of the GOP voters were so pleased that we would do that this for them that they would tell us on the ride home that they decided to vote for our candidates anyway.

That's why we need a "None of the Above" option when voting.

I think instead of just indicating which candidate you vote for, there should be two options for each: "Yes, I want to vote for this person!" and "Yes, but really reluctantly because he/she sucks donkey buttocks, but is very slightly less repellent than the other jerks, so I'll vote for him/her, but I want everyone to know I still think he/she is awful and I hate him/him very much."

That way politicians will stop mistaking getting elected with being approved of, and talking about "mandates" and stupid things like that. "Indeed, Senator, you won. But 99% of those voting for you agreed that you were only the lesser evil, like comparing a regular turd to a sick baby's diarrhea."

You're the ones who voted in Bush twice, so I wouldn't worry about that.

By "people" you also include the dead ones.

Document that being a Democratic tactic in the last 30 years?
The Democrats are know for some pretty incompetent campaign strategies so going after the dead people vote isn’t out of the question. I’m more interested in proof any of these dead people showed up at the poles. That’d have to be a shoe in for $1 million...
