Winston Woo Woo

They have had problems with bots (not people) putting links in their signature that go to commercial sites. This would boost their site in Google. There is a notice on the site saying do not use links in your signature.

Change your IP address (by turning your modem off overnight), delete your cache, delete your cookies, get a new e-mail address and re-register. They will then not know it is you. This time do not use a link in your signature. That is if you do want to be a member there.

Getting banned is an occupational hazard by people who sign up to woo sites.

Harpyja, please read this link. It predicts what happened to you.

Due to a spambot dilemma, please do not put any links in your signature at this time. If you have any links at all in your signature or introductory post, your member ID may be deleted. Thank you for your understanding and attention to this situation.

I got a rather courteous response back.
Hi *******,
If that is true then there was a misunderstanding with your account. I urge you to re-register again. Then PM Ninjapuppy, our moderator, about your link and if she will allow it. Normally we do not allow links in signatures for a while, until you establish that you are not a spammer. Then they are allowed.

Are you able to re-register? What was your user name before?

Thanks,
Winston
I'll simply reregister.

ETA; Thanks, rjh. I didn't notice that post. Usually I don't go to the "Introduce Yourself!" section of the forum... I'm not very chatty that way. I suppose I've learned my lesson.

No. It is a variation of what they do here, where no links are allowed until you have 15 posts. No signatures are allowed until 50 posts. Done for the same reason.

Um, I was able to create a signature.

ETA; To be honest, in hindsight, I think banning me was a bit of an over reaction. I obviously wasn't spamming, and the website I linked to wasn't commercial in any way. That would have been particularly obvious if someone had actually read - or even glanced at - my posts. Besides, JREF uses the forum technology itself to prevent people from creating signatures or posting links in the first place. I was permanently banned, immediately, without so much as a warning. (Why didn't they just wipe my signature, and send me a warning through PM or the email I provided?) Hence why I was so confused in the first place. Either it was lazy moderation, or a severe over reaction. Either way, it doesn't bode well.

No. It was lazy moderation. You allow someone to do something that is perfectly normal on most boards and then ban them for doing so without warning - that's poor administration. If you are concerned about spamming in sigs you can put in restrictions like we have here to prevent it from being an issue

You know that. I know that. But they do not know that.

In other words they probably do not know how to use the software they have to do this.

Here is the screencap:

Here are the posts.

Mind, I have never been banned from a forum before, so I'm baffled.

How dare you! A well thought out and written response!
If it were my forum I wouldn't just ban you!
I would think really bad thoughts about you as well!

Or

Maybe they are just a bunch of jerks running that forum?

Whatta think?

Why, thank you.

He seemed rather courteous, and the problem was quickly rectified. I haven't been on the forum lately - I'm not up for any sort of intellectual challenge at the moment, as I just had all four wisdom teeth pulled and I'm currently in the dreamland of pain medication, but I should go back on sometime after Father's Day this weekend.

Part 1:
I found these vid rants on the SCEPCOP site and I was wondering exactly who this guy is. I think I heard someone here reference him about having been a real ranter and raver.

The site seems to be more interested in attacking Randi, Shermer, etc. than anything to do with actually conduction scientific investigations into the paranormal.

What's up with this guy. What's his history here, etc.?

Winston Wu was here for a long time and posted much. Now he has his own site. That is probably best, he is really the best one at saying what he tries to say. The site is clearly much his own work and ideas.

As I understand it from his posts, (and surely with some bias on my part) - Wu's basic philosophy and website message is that 'sceptics' (note the "c", it is a big deal with him) should remain undecided about something until it is shown to be true or false. We should not assert something is false until proven false, just as we should not assert something is true until proven true. (I am not sure if he understands the concept of falsification).

My own 'lay' internet-poster-at-large view is that provisional judgments or assumptions are not in conflict with skepticism or science.

What could we humans possibly say or do that does not hold some potential for being wrong? And yet here we are, living from day to day making all these imperfect decisions. Maybe it is enough to drive some people crazy?

Winston is now free to promote his views, and let them stand or fall by his own doing instead of following someone else's rules and blaming them for failure. I disagree with his 'sceptic' philosophy - but if I don't like it, I click away.
