Wikileaks Internet Fight- Channers Hit Back

Believing that justice shouldn't be determined by how rich each side of the case is makes me a communist. How american.

If you haven't noticed I'm not American, and you keep sidestepping the subject to avoid facing the fact that your little heroes have committed multiple felonies.

Yeah, probably. Sending a large number of requests for information to a website in an attempt to bring it offline is arguably as heinous a crime as butchering somebody with a meat cleaver. I'd definitely apply the same sentence if I was a judge.

But spying on the UN is of course perfectly legal.

Spying is pretty much never legal but I definitely want my side doing it to all the others as much as possible.

Arlo Guthrie appears to have an understanding of the Internet better than anyone posting here:

Alice's Restaurant Lyrics

And the only reason I'm
singing you this song now is cause you may know somebody in a similar
situation, or you may be in a similar situation, and if your in a
situation like that there's only one thing you can do and that's walk into
the shrink wherever you are ,just walk in say "Shrink, You can get
anything you want, at Alice's restaurant.". And walk out. You know, if
one person, just one person does it they may think he's really sick and
they won't take him. And if two people, two people do it, in harmony,
they may think they're both faggots and they won't take either of them.
And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in
singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out. They may think it's an
organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day, I said
fifty people a day walking in singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and
walking out. And friends they may thinks it's a movement.

I'm not sidestepping anything, I just don't happen to automatically equate "illegal" with "bad". I prefer to approach things with my own morality, and take legal consquences into account.

But most importantly, you need to explain why sending numerous packets of information to a bank website is as serious an offence as stabbing somebody to death. Once you have done this, the discussion can advance.

They even attacked Sarah Palin's website and her and her husband's credit card accounts.

So that makes it at least three more counts on their sentence.

the ominous talk in pardalis' first post made me chortle, but this had me loling irl

4chan is the electronic equivalent of a town square.

There you go again with the same strawman. My point is that if you do the same crime repeatedly, the sentence will increase.

oh
but everyone wears masks and calls each other fag.

ackshilly, gord's quote is pretty good too.

Sure, so you can now explain why DDoSing four websites should earn you the same sentence as stabbing someone to death. Whenever you're ready.

They also attacked Sarah Palin's credit card account. I'm not a lawyer, but these felonies will compound, maybe not 20 to life, that was an exaggeration, but if they keep at it, it will be not far from it.

I don't entirely agree with what WikiLeaks has done. States do need to keep secrets to allow for smooth diplomatic operation.

But, given the attacks on WikiLeaks and the concerted efforts of large corporations to attack them then I'm generally supportive of the hackers attacks. They are not disruptive in the longer term and involve minimal cost to rectify.

The idea that supporting Assange makes someone a Communist is astoundingly stupid. People can hold differing views on particular subjects without conflicting on general beliefs.

Who is "They"? Can you identify "They"? If there are a 100,000 "They", are you going to lock them all up? How do you separate "They" from a MasterCard user or potential MasterCard user?

If thousands of people go to a site because they believed a Spam e-mail that said "Click on this url to win a free donkey", who do you prosecute?

:boggled:

I have been so floored by this entire thing that I don't even know where to begin.

It blows my mind that the likes of Wikileaks, and this protest, could draw any support whatsoever. I can't even begin to fathom how people can support any of this unless they are just the most anti-establishment, anti-authoritarian, angst ridden, self-important, arrogant FOOLS. Just plain rebels without a clue.

This has sincerely shocked my foundations a bit. Because I think is demonstrative of something I tried to bring up once in a thread when I first joined this forum. It didn't draw much discussion, which surprised me. That being that the internet, which is now considered a complete marvel, will probably be reviled and seen as a low point in human existence, at some point in the future. Because it gives every two bit fool and moron a bigger audience and easier means of drawing other two bit fools and morons into their line of thinking and basically feeds upon itself, and will eventually cause some monumental societal problems.

I feel like it's extremely powerful technology we have gained, that we are just not ready for at all. I think we are going to demonstrate that in the coming decades.

It makes it far easier than ever, in all of human history, for the lowest common denominator of human beings to become a large, cohesive force which could unravel everything that we hold dear and holds society together.

It's a different world then one where idiots with some newsletter could never find much traction amongst the masses. It's a world where every anarchistic simpleton can easily coordinate themselves with others into powerful enemies of society.

This is actually scary to me. The absolute arrogance and sense of entitlement held by so many people in this world is shocking. To think they have the right to know anything and everything, and damn any consequences. And to stir up trouble in vain protests of such things.. it's just so mind bogglingly stupid and self-important ********.

Call me a drama queen, make fun of my being outraged.. whatever you need to tell yourself. This stuff going on right now is absolutely indicative of where we are heading as a society. And it's damn scary. The fools will be in complete control, and flush this whole world right down the drain.

Common sense is dead. This world is going to hell. Just keep your heads down and try to ride it out. It's all you can do.

As I see it, the problems with Wikileaks are:

1. It is non-discrimanatory. It does not even attempt to differentiate "good" secrets from "bad," but lumps them all together and treats them equally (definitions are another conversation, my point remains).

2. Asange, the founder and leader, is on a crusade. He's said as much, himself. I have a tough time discriminating between crusaders and jihadists; to me, they're all fanatics and, being fanatics, are not amenable to seeing anything but their own side of the arguement.

3. Wikileaks is irresponsible. Assange claims that not one life has demonstrably been lost due to the leaked documents. Well, I maintain that not one life has demonstrably been lost in Haiti due to the cholera outbreak; any particular victim could very well have come down with it all on his own.

But then, that's just my opinion.

Wow. You forget to put /substance-free rant at the end.

A DDoS is the very antithesis of free speech. What a bunch of hypocrites.

Further, I would strongly advise against anyone joining the "protests", not on any political grounds, but merely because voluntarily joining a botnet is just a stupid thing to do from a security standpoint.

I never said it was murder, that's in your head. But it is a felony punishable with incarceration, and the more they attempt it, the more people and organization they target, the more years will be added to their sentence. These things have a tendency to build up.

You are aware, of course, that there is no such thing as a felony in Canada?
