Why vegans are simply better people

I'm sorry to say that this is one of the saddest and disturbing post I've read on this forum.

It is if you think it's true. I on the other hand still firmly believe this is one of the outrageous things vegans or vegetarians say in order to appear logically consistent, but is in actuality not true. It's a ridiculous answer to a ridiculous hypothetical (in the sense it's extremely unlikely to have happened or ever happen)
I don't know if Dessi has kids or not, but in my experience women who would say something like this (and I've met a few) don't have kids. After they have kids they're less likely to to put the life of a child on par with the life of an animal. Even hypothetically.
That's just my experience.

Ooooh, mind reading going into wimminz territory.

And we're back to the "just my experience", this thread has clearly evolved.

Well I thought Dessi was serious, and she has said that she won't have children. As for hypotheticals, strip them from this thread and there would be little left.

The OP is a troll.

I'd like to say he's pretty lousy troll at that, but really, how many lousy trolls can boast a troll thread with 1000+ responses?

I'd like to hope that was true, but the sentiment is not confined to internet trolling. The vegan equals "enlightened" or "better" idea is something i've heard more than once in "real life" and on the net - and not from a troll.

Ok, at this point I just have to make sure I understand what you're both saying:

If I say: Dessi didn't equate humans with other animals, she equated the moral considerations we should offer humans and other animals.

Would that be a fair representation of what Dessi has said, and what RandFan and Qayak are arguing about ?

  • For me, yes.
  • I would also accept the every day parlance of "Dessi equated humans with animals", if it isn't used as an equivocation. I would not be pedantic if the word wasn't used to accuse Dessi of something untoward.

The discussion has derailed by arguing what "equating" means, leaving the more important issue untouched. It started with 16.5 accusing Dessi of dehumanising a group of humans by "equating" them to certain animals. She is not dehumanising any humans, it is fairer to say that she is humanising non-human animals. After all, she is not saying "some people are no better than animals, so it is okay to chop them into pieces and eat them", she is saying "some animals are no worse than people, so it is not okay to chop them into pieces and eat them". Big difference.
I accept that. I should have just said that Dessi did not dehumanize anyone. The technical bs about a word was a waste of everyone's time. Nothing good could have come of it and I regret that. I'm out of that debate. :)

Save a human infant or a dog? I would probably save the human infant.

Save a human infant or a cat? I would probably save the human infant, but this is a tougher decision.

Save a human adult or another animal? It really depends upon the human adult - there are a great many people I'd step over to save another animal.

As a meat eater and one who often debates vegans, I think it would be dishonest not to admit that there is a lot of boorish behavior on our side. We are all humans. That's it.

You forgot to add one piece of information ...

Are you a vegan, vegetarian or an omnivore?

I completely agree.

When the **** hits the fan, nobody really knows how they'll act or what they'll do.

All we're doing here is sharing abstract thoughts.

None of the above - there are many things I will not eat, and many that I enjoy eating.

(I have been having a craving for chocolate all day)

I'm just saying I'm skeptical. My first post in this thread was that I'm skeptical that PETA actually supports a lot of the stuff you see in the news. It's purely for shock value and perhaps a way to recruit the most radical people possible.
I think it's possible Dessi believes right now, from the comfort of the hypothetical she would flip a coin, but if the situation was presented to her she would react without thinking to saving the child first. Even if she evaluated the situation briefly and determined it was easier or safer to go for the animal she would invariably go for the child.
That's my opinion, and yes it's based on my own personal experience. I believe from my own experience most of what animal rights activists say is for shock value.

Nonsense.

The form of government has nothing to do with whether people are right or wrong.

Truth has nothing to do with popularity or the herding of sheep.

You're right, it has nothing to do with a form of government. It has everything to do with consensus opinion establishing societal norms or even morality.

Your argument is a non-starter. If most people felt there was no differentiating humans from animals there would be more vegetarians and eating meat would be illegal. (or at the very least not what it is today)
