Why use thermite at all?

Because I've seen the Mythbusters cut a car in two with it, and Braniac here on UK TV used it to destroy the engine block of a car. Silent? Silent my @rse! It sounds like a pit full of rabid cats being deep-fried alive and produces a volcanic plume of toxic fumes. It's uncontrollable and sprays molten metal in dangerous fashion.

Your friends at Burning Man loudly claimed they were going to use thermite to artistically and symbolically cut and demolish yards-high steel lettering as concrete and absolute proof of thermite demolition at the Twin Towers.

What they actually did after finding out what thermite is and what it does, was to put a lit pot of thermite on a steel block and burn a hole in it.

In all fairness, Mythbusters failed to cut a car in two with it. In the vertical plane - no less - and with no pesky restrictions on their shennanigans ;)

I recall that the windscreen and quite a few other parts survived.

I suggest all of you ignore the idiocy of SHC. He is nothing but a troll. Two weeks worth of "caveman" nonsense, and "government truther" nonsense. He's a troll. He provides zero sources or evidence to back him up. He constantly hand waves anything put forward, and his sole retort to the evidence we put forth is "but what if...". He's not worth the effort. As to the topic. I'm of a firm belief that the reason thermite came into the discussion was a failure of Steven Jones to comprehend what he was seeing. Whether intentionally or not, he saw pictures of the WTC beams that had been cut by iron workers and oxy-acetylene torches and thought it was from the collapse. He was given the doctored still from the Naudet doc showing rescue workers around a light source and he fell for it. Once he had invested all this effort into thermite and once those images had been thoroughly debunked, he had already been entrenched with the other whack jobs and fell victim to the mob mentality of 9/11 Truth. It's quite sad really, to get to a point where you have to continue the lie because admitting you were wrong is too difficult for you.

I agree, but when a serious physicist makes such mistakes it makes you wonder about the mental state of that person.

Errrr - yeah - but - ah! of course! They simply didn't use enough! Yeah, yeah, they should have put Grant and Tori and Kari on it with a truckload of thermite until the car fell apart.

Anyway, Mythbusters not cutting the car in half proves I am right (shc logic!)
