I have three stories about World War 2 which I'd like to offer up as an antidote to the Nacho lovers and Coconut deniers (thanks Akhenaten!):
My Grandfather on my fathers side got dropped in Arnheim as part of Operation Market Garden. He was a Paratrooper. They were expecting to go up against old men and boys but ran into heavy resistance at the famous "Bridge too far". My Grandad ended up holed up in a basement of a house. In the basement he discovered the owners collection of fine wines and brandies. After sampling liberally from these he fell into a deep sleep. He finally awoke to find himself surrounded by German soldiers. The German officer said "For you Tommy, ze war is over." They took him back to their HQ and gave him a slap up meal and loads of booze.
My Grandfather on my mothers side was in the RAF. He went over to France with the BEF and I think he can't have been very good because he was put in charge of the records. (not of the whole BEF, just his squadron I think it was). He didn't have a clue what he was supposed to do and as the days passed the paperwork mounted up. He was just stuffing it in boxes and hoping, but knowing that there would be a reckoning one day and agonising over it all the time. Eventually they got pushed back to Dunkirk (actually I think they were down the coast from Dunkirk), standing on the beach waiting to be taken off by a boat. My Grandad's commanding officer comes up to him and says "Hancock! We can't leave anything for the Germans. Burn all the records!"
My Grandad said it was the best moment of his entire life.
My final story from the war comes from a friend of the family, Max Palmer. He was a scout in the German army, part of that furiously fast push into France at the start of the war. He was ahead of the main advance, scouting, when he came upon an apple orchard on a French farm. In an outbuilding he found many barrels of cider. Drinking his fill he fell asleep in the sun under an apple tree.... to wake up surrounded by English soldiers with the officer saying "For you Fritz, the war is over." They treated him really well, he spent the entire war in prison and ended up marrying an English girl called Ruby.
