Why is the UN Taking Sides in Libya?

I'm not supportive of the death penalty but there is a world of difference between executing convicted murderers and using your military to massacre political protesters.

Why is the UN Taking Sides in Libya?

so when the UN refuses to take on brutal Middle East dictators, they are bad.

but when the UN condemns and takes on brutal Middle East dictators, they are VERY bad.

phaw. Politicians !

So they are just being political and going along with the trend rather than truly being correct.

I am not convinced that MOST of the Libyans are NOT on the side of Khadaffi. I think Khadaffi's behavoir is no different than what Abu al-Qasim Muhammad Hashim would have done. To say Khadaffi is a bad guy is to say Muhammad was a bad guy. To side against Khadaffi is just as bad as siding against Islam.

To us, protesting against the leader is s right. To Muslims, protesting aginst Muhammed is a death sentence.

But these policitians have not thought this thing out so deeply.

I don't think the protestors in Libya have a legit beef either. Khadaffi does not flaunt a lot of wealth and does not have any Swiss bank accounts. He has no yacht. No private jet. He is not burdening his population because he has a castle or palace.

I did the math. Libya's wealth evenly distributed among its population does not come out to very much. It is a miracle that they are not all living below the poverty line.

I think Khadaffi's supporters know this. I think he might win.

The utter cluelessness in this post takes some beating. This is how oppressed they are in that country, last time I was there most of the guys I worked with did not even know anything about the sanctions. When I said they had been lifted they asked what had been lifted. They had never heard of them. Outside Tripoli I never saw anyone read a newspaper. The ones in Tripoli were state propoganda and the poverty surrounding Triploi was shocking while he has billions squirreled away in the UK. You could not even take any of their money outside the country. None of the locals had even heard of Megrahi.

He used military aircraft against peaceful protestors. End of story. Anyone trying to compare that with the USA is a loon or trolling.

Old Kadaffy is way too sovereign to be touched. UN better leave him be. Sumbitch seized power fair and square, back in '69, just like Saddam did in Iraq. Been large and in charge ever since. Sovereign as a 500 lb gorilla in a cage full of rhesus monkeys.

And no Iraq-bemoaner better even mention the U.S. "reconstructing" Libya.

New rule for all foreigners: you want Libya reconstructed, you petition your own government to do it. On your dime. Especially if you're French, German, Russian, or Chinese.

Did it even occur to you that one might first have to consider the Libyan's position on the matter?

They seem to reject foreign military intervention, they have plenty of oil, they could very well refuse foreign reconstruction help out of national pride.

Just one more reason for us to stay out of it unless and until the new Libyan government asks us, specificly to help with reconstruction.

But then, seeing how well Haliburton and KBR did in iraq, I can't imagine whjy they would.

What's that got to do with my post you were replying to?

Well, it is a political body.

What is a political body? Your posts don't make any sense.

I am reminded on how right wing pundits are attacked by taking their comments and breaking them into sound bytes as if each individual word or part of a sentence is a complete thougt to be taken out of context.

Becauce no one likes Gaddafi.

Well, we, for one, should. He has been an ally agains Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda.

Also, he has his supporters in Libya. Try getting your facts straight before posting easily dismissed lies.

You are wrong, to be blunt. These are LIBYA's people within the borders of LIBYA'S own country.

The United States government has slaughtered its own people may times in many different ways.

We had our own civil war. We have had our own wars against our own native peoples. Religious groups in the United States have both slaughtered their own people and also massacred innocent people outside their religion. Our federal government has told sects to stop certain religious practices or the government would take away their property and even their children.

We or the UN has no damn right getting involved in Libya.

There is also the double standard. We tell ourselves that Islam is a religion of peace. Yet with Qkadaffie (I claim new spelling) is not doing anything worse that what Muhammad did.

Picking sides implies there is some sort of tangible Universal Human RIghts. Tell that to the illegal aliens we capture and deport.
