Why is Fanta so difficult to drink.

Bah... look at the ingredients--it was just a half and half mixture of Coke and Diet Coke.

I would love to participate in a blind taste test comparing corn syrup-sweetened soda to sugar-sweetened.

Remember "New Coke"?

That's what a sugar-sweetened soda tastes like.

Snopes has a good write-up on the history of it. Coke had switched to more and more corn syrup and less and less sugar over the years. Finally, one of the high-ups had the idea to return to a formula much closer to the original, and replace a bunch of the corn syrup with sugar. Thus, New Coke (which was, oldly enough, closer to old coke than Coke Classic was).

Of course, we all know the effect of that :)

rRrrRreeemmmmemmmbbeeerrrrrrrr JOLT! Cola?!?!?

-Jittery.

(Twice the sugar and 10X the caffeine or something silly was their marketing ploy...)

Not exactly--according to Snopes:

Diet Coke was stripped of its artificial sweeteners, and high fructose corn syrup was added in their place. After a year of fiddling with the flavor balances, New Coke was finally as good as the company could make it.

Having created Diet Coke with its own flavor (and in the process creating the most successful diet soda), they tried making a non-diet version of it--with corn syrup.

You're right, my mistake. I was remembering an alternate universe ;)

You can't prove me wrong!!!

Heh, I provide my source and STILL get it wrong.

Anyway, I do remember that new coke was preferred in blind taste tests (please tell me I'm not mis-remember...uh...remembering alternate timelines on that one, too)

Nope. That was Hawkeye. It was ribs. They shiped it as medical supplies. And, yes, they forgot the sauce.

No, they got the sauce. Told the girl that was shipping it for them that they used it because they couldn't "use real blood" for "anatomy practise".

They forgot the slaw.

That is my understanding but there was something very traditional and sacrosanct about such an institution like Coke. Taste is not the only reason why we like somethings. Marketing and perceptions are significant factors. Your taste for a particular beer or soda is far more likely due to your taste and sensibilities in advertising. As a graphic production manager for 8 years I can tell you that we often noted that perception is greater than reality. I think most magicians, ad execs and flim flam men would agree.
