The other day, someone put up a picture of Amanda Todd side by side with a pic of another guy. On Todd's photo, it said something like, "Put her boobs on the internet and has sex with a guy in a relationship. She gets bullied and kills herself and the nation weeps."
On the guys photo, it said something like, "Gets bullied because he's ugly and no one cares."
That may have revamped the conversation.
I saw that picture as well. While I think it beings up a valid point, that we tend to only 'care' (on a national sense) about suicide when it's a beautiful young white girl even though it's a huge problem for a lot of people who aren't, I also feel like some people are using that picture to diminish the suffering and problems that this young woman faced. I've seen it posted with the comment 'she knew what she was doing'.
The posters seem to be say that because she made some, rather large, mistakes she deserves less attention than someone who is bullied for reasons completely beyond their control. Again, the people who are bullied for reasons completely beyond their control
do deserve more attention than they are getting, this girl's mistakes in no way justified bullies following her from school to school and town to town.
What's even more crazy is that the facebook friend who posted this poster with the comment 'she knew what she was doing' is the little sister of one of my friends, and I happen to know that this little sister has made the
exact same mistakes that Amanda Todd made, sans suicide, and thankfully had the support of a lot of people in her life to get over it. She was also lucky enough not to gain any dedicated bullies because of these mistakes.
I have several friends who have done modeling. I have several friends who are stunningly beautiful. The lack of sympathy they sometimes get for their problems can be staggering. Apparently some people think that beautiful people don't have any real problems.
This entire thing is one ugly can of worms.
