Why does the U.S. Mint hate America?

http://www.crosswalk.com/news/11531301/

I originally hated the idea of the new Presidential series, because I don’t want the Presidents on our coins to begin with. Nixon. What are they thinking?

But I think I might use them as much as possible, just to torque off people like Troy Thoreson, quoted from the link:

"I thought it was a slick move by the government to take it step-by-step but eventually not have 'In God We Trust' on the front or back of any coin," Troy Thoreson, president of Thoreson Numismatics in Los Banos, Calif., told Cybercast News Service on Thursday.

"When this story first started to develop from the U.S. Mint, I could see the writing on the wall," said Thoreson, whose primary expertise is in dealing with modern coins.

As Cybercast News Service reported earlier, the Thomas More Law Center, a national public interest law firm, is urging Americans to avoid using the presidential dollar coins altogether.

"It is astounding that Congress has effectively done what atheist litigants have been unsuccessfully trying to do for years - erase all reference to God from our money," said Richard Thompson, president and chief counsel of the Law Center.

"And if you're a collector, you just need three of these coins: one with the inscription printed properly, one with the inscription accidentally printed upside-down and one of those that have no inscription at all," Thoreson added. "Get your one example of each and take the rest back down to the bank."

The man sounds like an idiot. I am a coin collector, and it’s been my experience that the hobby is absolutely rife with right-wing reactionaries and fundamentalists.

In addition, the comment about collecting edge inscriptions “accidentally printed upside down” is moronic, especially considering that this Thoreson guy is a coin dealer. There is no right-side-up for the edge inscription; the coins are fed through randomly, so there should be equal numbers of each.

I think the new coins are pretty, but I don’t like the theme. I won’t be collecting them, but I will be gladly using them if I keep hearing fundies spouting off about them.

Y'know, sometimes words are simply insufficient to articulate certain levels of inanity.

YEt despite liveing in a country with a state religion there is a slight lack of a mention og god on my money.

Ugh. That commericial that might as well have the tagline, "You know who doesn't buy American trucks? Al Qaeda."

True but only because after kicking around someone of the harshest combat zones on the planet for a few years you really start to appreaciate the reliability of the Toyota Hilux.

Just a quick question.

I tougth I'd see how much are people asking for them on ebay - that's crazy.

If you look at the large pic, you can clearly see thew work trust on the edge of the coin! Is it just that they put it somewhere else other than usual and people don't know, or has this been confirmed by the US mint? Or is this seller just doint the usual ebay scam?

Just asking

Evidence?

News Story

As one might expect, eBay and other auction sites are also filled with what might charitably be called traps for the unwary, from auctions featuring "upside down" lettering (when the lettering is applied, it is done randomly and can face either direction) to the individual selling a Washington dollar that is completely blank on both sides.

<- that's my evidence, but it is problematic. For one thing, a "dollar that is completely blank on both side" could be a legitimate error, as blank planchets do sometimes escape the mint, and are popular errors to collect. So I don't know if whoever wrote this article knows what they are talking about, either.

My original comment was based on discussions at numismatic forums. I'd seen various people describe the edge-inscription process. Although much of the information is speculative, since the Mint isn't always forthcoming about the manufacturing process (and is much, much less forthcoming about how errors occur), there seems to be widespread agreement that after the obverse and reverse are stamped, they are fed into a different device that stamps the edges. In this second step, the coins are fed through without regard to which side is facing up.

If I find another cite, I'll post it.

That is so sad! You poor godless folks.

You can do what I do, and write the deity of your choice on paper money. Thor is king of my heart!

This guy is selling it based not on missing lettering, but on allegedly upside-down lettering. I'd say don't walk, but run, from this sort of scam. I have three W. dollars in my pocket right now, and I just pulled them out to check. Two are "upside down" and one is "right side up." Ooooh, and my Sacagawea dollar is missing its edge lettering!;)

Actually, there is.

UK coins say:

D.G.REG.F.D

Well close I was looking at a £2 coin so not quite so abrevated. However given that the faith in this case would be CofE I'm not sure the god bit is meant to come in.
