Why does God hate sex?

Consider evolutionary psychology. Among many of our cousin primates, as well as other social species, the dominant males strive to monopolize reproduction. As others have pointed out in this thread, authoritarian religions are all about power and control over the social unit. The desire to control who may and may not reproduce, and under what circumstances, may be an atavistic artifact of this need to dominate the gene pool.

If I may offer a correction, God does not always hate sex. In fact, I would say that:

God loves sex when it is useful to God,
God is ambivalent about sex when it does not impact God one way or the other, and
God hates sex when it is counter to his purpose.
 
Marketing 101. You have a product that you can't sell. You create a need for your product. $$$$$$$$$


Early hucksters of religion needed to convince the masses that they needed the religion the hucksters were selling. The hucksters did this by convincing people that a normal human urge that everybody had was wrong, and that the only solution to their wickedness was to follow the teachings of the hucksters.

Just to be nitpicky, if there is no god, there isn't something that can exercise the emotion of hate toward much of anything, rendering the statement/question void of meaning. :)

Let me offer you an idea that God, as conventionally envisioned by Christians, might feel very favorably towards sex.

1. God is pleased by worship (If it pleases God, we can say He likes it, and most certainly doesn't hate it).
2. The more who worship the better
3. Instructions to "go forth, be fruitful, and multiply"
4. Sex as method for point 3.
5. Sex away, as you'll make more worshippers.
6. More worshippers, more pleased God, nothing but sweetness and light ...
7. (At some point here, am I supposed to say "Profit"? I forget the correct format.) ;)

There's only one God, so there's no one for him to have sex with, but he's omnipresent so he sees it all the time. That's gotta get frustrating.

Why do some people imagine a god that doesn't like sex?

This is a much more productive question, I think.

A few responses:

  • They want to control what other people think and do
  • Sex is powerful and desirable. He who controls access to sex controls nearly everything.
  • They don't want other people to have fun
  • They aren't good at it and want to level the playing field
  • Nearly everyone is sexual. By making sex dirty (inappropriate, forbidden, controlled), they instantly make nearly everyone guilty of something
 
The Mormons have a Mr. and Mrs. God. They're still pretty repressive about sex, though, so that clearly didn't solve the problem.
 
I'm kind of with Meadmaker on this. Marvin Harris (anthropologist) points out that many religious notions we think of as odd (like dietary regulations) have a good, solid economic basis.
To folks living back then, often in a rather marginal existence with early death the norm...Procreation is vitally important. A tribe or a people has to reproduce rapidly enough to cover losses, and at the same time must have some sort of order in society regarding the "ownership" of those children.

And you take a gander at God's blue marble every one and every thing is doing the dirty deed from the tiny microbes to the great blue whales. God botherers have got to do some serious hiding if they want to get away from sex... Even those paper bags on their heads won't keep them safe, the sneezes? Those are from the plant sex going down.:p

Who are u kidding.. in the last 50 years the population on earth has doubled, compared to the last 1950 years with such a thing as 'birth control' available lol.

Well, I actually had sex once, and let me tell you, it was dirty and disgusting. There was social awkwardness and an embarrassing mess to clean. It was sweaty and some animal noises happened. The shame lingers for a life time.

God had damn good reasons for his tastes.

He also hates clams.

Sex brings feelings into play and thats pretty much it full stop.

So to not create feelings of envy, hate, wrath, lust etc between individuals cause someone is having sex with someone who isn't married and other wants to with the same person. For example, ladyB isnt married and ManC had sex with her, ManB finds out and wants to have sex with ladyB also and does so. ManC finds out, grows hate and wants to kill ManB for it(same happens if someone cheats when in a marriage, maybe not also as extreme as killing but it does happen you cant deny that).

Now marriage is there to try and stop that. If someone is married we know they are spoken for and it usually ends right there (i'll put a spin on this, as ive thought about this abit also, if both people in the marriage are happy for one to have sex with another person in a marriage and they are both happy, willing for the other to do so, acceptance of it. LadyX from the first married couple may have sex with ManY from the second married couple. However if one disagrees, it cannot be).

Also something to do with sperm, eggs, they're alive. Why no wanking and hinting to only have sex to procreate.

Holy spirit could be female and that was how Jesus was created, and Adam and Eve. Hence why he doesn't like homo's.

Birth control a sin? haven't read that but i think i have a fate memory of someone saying it before, tho i didn't think they had any form of birth control back in them days to relate too? unless you mean abortion.

It would be interesting to think about in what regions the birthrate is highest, and the socioeconomic status in those areas.

It would also be interesting to think about how influential religion was in those areas.
 
Why would God create something he hated? Genesis is clear. He told Adam and Eve to procreate. They couldn't do it without having sex. So hatred of sex by the biblical God is a rather weird idea. Maybe what you mean is sex outside of matrimony. Or perhaps sex between members of the same gender. Or sex with between humans and animals. Then it would not be sex per-se as you make it seem but sex under certain circumstances which the biblical God declares unclean or inappropriate.

Actually, a lot of modern Protestants very much deny that last part. Google "hot monogamy". Many Evangelicas are explicit that sex is to be enjoyed, including kinky sex if that's your taste. As long as you only do it with your married spouse.
