Why do YOU love Jesus?

1. Crucifixion is certainly a gruesome way to die. However, Jesus saved me from something far worse. An eternity in hell as punishment for my sins. If a person saved your life by pulling you out of a burning house, you would be forever thankful. I have that same gratitude to Jesus.

I would be glad that I was pulled from the house. But in this analogy the person pulling me from the house would be the same person that set it on fire and put me in the house to begin with. So I certainly wouldn't be grateful.

2. I understand your point. However, you're not God. Here's a human comparison that will have some exceptions. When we were children, most of our parents gave us specific commands because they wanted the best for us. God's the same way, just on a much higher level.

None of the parents I know who love their children would ever create a place of eternal damnation with no hope of redemption and send their kids their as a punishment for not believing in them (or as punishment for anything else).

I'd want to kick him in the jimmy.

The only level at which someone can "die to redeem something" like other people's sins, is the ancient notion of "human sacrifice", and the scapegoat theory of justice.

I have read hundreds of pages of theists attempting to explain this and it still does not make any sense to me in the 21st century.

People choose to make a claim that they believe this, and that is fine, but I'd be surprised if anyone actually has thought this through and still think it makes sense.

This pretty much covers my response as well.

Charles Darwin rescued me from the repressive and hostile teachings of the christian church. Once I discovered the logical and rational explanations of decent with modification I no longer had to suffer the absurdity of genesis, and the hatefully schizophrenic hallucinations of revelations. The science of Egyptology taught me of the lies of exodus, geo- & astrophysics liberated me from the dogma of the creation myth. The science of ecology prevents the distortions of creationism from taking root - too many apex preditors coexisting for the available food supply - and physics in general taught me that nothing can take it, play with it, alter its rules, and commit the heinous miracle of regenerating my skeptical skin ad nauseum into eternity as it is blackened and roasted from my bones. Such a loving deity 154 & PJ would foist on the rest of us.
