Even if statements taken at face value, how does one parlay concerns about the war on terrorism into an across-the-board conversion to right wing agenda...?

1) Opportunism and ego

2) The childiish allure of rebellion: self-righteous, against the grain, going it alone despite slings and arrows, poor brave Dennis (a syndrome that Hitchens has succumbed to)

Preemptively, no, it can't be automatically assumed that anyone who converts is a phony asswipe. But when the dots can't be connected, ala Wesley Clark, the bulls**t meter registers.

The problem with Miller is very simple: he's supposed to be a comic, but he's not funny. What his political views are have nothing to do with it. He wouldn't have been one bit funnier if he were a communist.

I think the best thing about Miller is that it pisses the left off so much. His show sucks and it will be cancelled. He is not funny and he comes off as boorish and arrogant...but damn is it ever worth it.

I'm curious varwoche, do you think the hippies of the 60's were products of the childish allure of rebellion and self-righteousness going against the grain (establishment)?

Also, is it possible for someone on the left to convert to a right leaning position without being childish?

What do you think of Krauthammer?

In your opinion are there any sincere and or inteligent right leaning individuals?

Yes, it's a natural part of adolescence.

Yes

Don't like his politics, don't like his vibe.

Yes

Fair enough. That's exactly why I like Al Franken.

I'll admit it's an immature motivation - will you? ;)

Oh absolutely!

I will say that Moore pisses me off more than Franken. And he can be much funnier IMO.

All the right answers IMHO.

You are ok in my book.

Though I'm sorry that you don't like Krauthammer. He along with Pat Cadell (Democrat) are my two favorite pundits. Oh well, one can't have everything.

Dennis Miller does have his funny moments. eg. In one of his rants books on "Fear of Flying, he writes "Every time I have to fly there is always a whining crying baby on board, namely me ....". I recommend reading any of his books.

He does project a total lack of sincerity though. So he's right-wing now? Just wait and watch him suckup to President Kerry (or maybe Edwards) and change his political leanings.

To declare topics 'off limit' for his comedy material - we says he wont make fun of Bush - makes
him loose a lot of his credibility. Moore and Franken will poke fun at their own kind
if it will get a laugh and make their point.

I wouldn't say that Moore or Franken have a good deal of credibility. Neither do they go to great lengths to poke fun at "their own kind".

In the grand scheme of things the attitude that "our comics, pundits, etc. are always better than yours" is far less credible than a comic or pundit who reserves most of his criticism for the opposition.

And to those who would deny this position ask yourself, how often do you criticize the opposition as opposed to those who share your ideology?

I find (or found, at any rate) Dennis Miller to be hilarious. He has a way with a simile that is unmatched. Lots of people don't find him funny because you have to be somewhat well read to get a lot of his jokes.

But being part of the left that he has decided to abandon, I am very disappointed in him. I think it is bitterness over losing the Monday Night Football job. He wants to show America that he can be as much of a redneck and bigot as many "average Americans" are, albiet a clever, well educated redneck bigot.

Hey Tricky,

Interesting. Do you have any examples of Dennis being either a red neck or bigot?

What is your definition of red neck?

I loved Miller's old HBO show. Yep, I'm a lefty, but I found it funny and clever.

But when he figured out what his schtick was, he started phoning it in. Nothing but lazyness.

I had no problem with his politics while he was funny. It's just that when he's not funny (increasingly), his politics become his apology for not being funny. Or rather something he could beat his audience with:

"If you're not laughing, you must be some closed-minded, liberal pu##y. Laugh, damn you, LAUGH!"

Oh, let me help. His definition of a bigot is "Anyone Who Doesn't Agree With Tricky". Tricky himself may be a red-neck to at least some other people; who cares?

Or maybe he's more John Kerryish? That would be a hoot! :p

Yeah, my feelings too.

Oh, BTW, for RandFan and Hammy, it was tongue-in-cheek. I would have thought that the "bitterness over losing Monday Night Football gig" would have clued you in. Good sarcasm is ruined by smileys.

No, Dennis is not a redneck or a bigot. That was a joke. Apparently it was about as funny as Dennis's recent material. But then, I'm not paid to be funny.

Awww. why not go for a career in stand-up? I haven't laughed so hard since grandma swallowed a bug at Aunt Millie's funeral.

Here is why Dennis Miller is a phony asswipe :

He's not a liberal and he has a tv show where he says what he wants to and not what he has to.
