Your OP lacks context. Malcolm X died in 1965. In 1965 there were plenty of whites who thrived on the public approval of their very overt racism. People ran for governors of states on Segregationist tickets, and won. Some ran for president. Some ran for the U.S. Senate. Strom Thurmond did all of the above, won at everything but the run for president, set records for longevity in Congress, and he's only been gone for less than a decade.
If you can't remember segregated schools, restaurants, movie theaters, hotels, bathrooms, even drinking fountains then you cannot understand the mindset of those times, half a century ago.
