Who's on Firefox 4.0?

You can also hold the left-click for a second and the list will drop.

Cute.

Those 'pause for a response' cues are harder to stumble across by random clicking.

I found the right-click one right away, and never paused with a left-click long enough to see that.

Thanks.

(Guardedly. I have a suspicion that you have cursed me to start holding mouse buttons down in random places just to see if anything happens. :p)

Me.

I really like FF, but... why isn't there a "save target as" option on right click, so you can download stuff straight to a folder? It annoys me.

Thanks.

It starts to feel more natural once you use touch interfaces enough; most of them substitute long presses for functions accessed by right clicks in mouse-based interfaces. In fact, the only reason I used the long click to find that dropdown in FF 4 is that I've been doing most of my web browsing lately on my Android tablet (rooted Nook Color). :)

Maybe it needs the new touch interfaces. I haven't been playing with any of those.

I was using a Motion Computing tablet with touch interface at work (all day long) for several years, starting back in 2005. It didn't use that pause technique any more heavily than any of my other computers which weren't a touch interface.

I am way behind on all the slick new smartphone technology. I still have a Motorola i880 for my cell phone. It's durable enough to withstand eight ft. falls onto concrete and has kick-ass stereo speakers (for a cell phone :)).

Hehe, fair enough. I've found that the method is common in new touch software. Prior to the current wave (iOS and Android), the touch interfaces I used were stylus based and everything tended to activate the moment the stylus touched the screen; so, a hold to activate secondary functions wasn't as practical.

Yeah.

That Motion tablet was stylus based.

I loved that thing, though. Most useful new technology to hit the construction industry since the highlighter was invented.

Anyone know how to bookmark a tab without opening it? I used to be able to have multiple tabs showing, and whilst viewing the content of one tab I could right-click --> bookmark tab on another tab to bookmark it. Now, the only bookmark option available is 'bookmark all tabs', which is not what I want.

Right now that's the only annoyance I seem to be having.

I'm not at home so I can't try it, but someone on a forum suggested this:

Right click on the X in the Tab to get the correct drop down menu.

from here: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/792819

That will get an option to place a copy of the unopened tab's URL into your clipboard. (BTW, it isn't needful to be in the "X" itself. Anywhere on the tab in question will do.)

I think Ray was asking for any entry option in the Bookmarks file from an unopened tab. I don't know a way to do that. I think it only comes up if the tab in question is in the foreground. ETA: Make that "... if the cursor is on the page in question." Even the tab of the page in the foreground seems to have only the same right-click menu as the unopened tabs.

"Save Link As..." will work, mostly. Depending on how the website was made, you might just get url link.

Updated on 2 computers - one XP and one Windows 7. Google Toolbar enabled caused "Open New Window" to not work anywhere near correctly. 1-click weather doesn't work. Waiting to see what other issues there are. Even though FF4 is faster, not a happy camper - QC seems to suck.

Tabbed groups is incomplete and not ready for prime time. No persistence between sessions.

And I have read that Mozilla may plan on faster release cycles - given FF4 had a lot of problems - especially with one of the main competitive features of FF being addons - seems like Mozilla is going in a very bad direction.

Do you also blame Microsoft when non-Microsoft software doesn't work?

It can NEVER be Mozillas problem that plugins don't behave. FF4 has been in public beta for quite a while. If plug-in authors can't be bothered to test their code in a new major version, well... That says a lot about that plug-in IMHO.

Was tabgroups a major reason for you upgrading to FF4? If yes, I can maybe understand your disappointment (I think they rock. Together with app tabs they make organizing "multithreaded browsing" quite a lot easier and clutterfree). If no... Just don't use it? FF4 will behave as your trusty 3.6.x then.

And how exactly should they be persistant between browsing sessions? Tabs aren't. (ETA: Tabs aren't persistant between sessions in the default setting. They can be made kind of persistant though. ETA2: quadraginta explains it in more detail below).

seems like Mozilla is going in a very bad direction.

I think quite the opposite. FF4 seems rock-solid, less of a memory-hog and faster than FF3. If Mozilla wants to keep up with Chrome in particular but also IE, they need a faster release cycle. Granted it might cause some plug-ins to lag behind, but caveat emptor; if a plugin is vital for you then make sure it works in a new browser version before upgrading.

I might be able to help with that one.

Check the "When Firefox starts:" setting in Tools>Options>General. If it is set at "Show my windows and tabs from last time" then I lied, and I don't know what the hell is wrong.

If it isn't and is set to "Show my home page" then you can change that and when you re-start all your groups should be the way you left them.

Another option if you want to have FF start up in a homepage sometimes (I'm not sure why, you can just put the homepage in one of the groups ... but anyway ...) then you need to change a different setting.

For some reason the default on installation with FF4 does not display the "Save and Quit" popup menu when you shut it down anymore.

This is easily changed in the about:config preference settings. This link will show you how.

After "browser.showQuitWarning" is set to true the exit option window should start coming up when you quit FF. Just click "Save and Quit" and when you crank back up your tab groups should be there.

I have recently started using an add-on called Tab Mix Plus, which has a slightly better session manager than the one built in to FF4. You might want to look at it as well.

Sadly, none of this helps much if FF doesn't get to exit politely. I just recently learned that the hard way. I'm still looking for a more durable solution to the same problem.

Nah, doesn't work. I get the same drop-down no matter where I right-click in the tab, and the only bookmark option is to bookmark ALL tabs.

I guess the feature I'm looking for was not ported over to this latest release. Bummers. I have sometimes a dozen or more tabs open at once and don't need or want to bookmark ALL of them, just the one I'm right-clicking on. I know it's only one extra step, but I liked having that option.

In fact, I used to right-click on a tab to open a new tab, now you have to click on that little folder with the gear on it to open a new tab. That gear/folder thingy is only about 1/6th or 1/7th the size of my tab, so I have to be much more accurate with my mouse clicks. Not a big deal to you young whippersnappers, but these tired old eyes get easily annoyed. :D

Not to sound condescending but may I suggest using shortcut keys? Ctrl+T (or Cmd+T for the Mac) opens a new tab without having to hit a 32x32 px target with the mouse. Ctrl+Shift+D bookmarks the current tab. Ctrl+W closes the current tab.
