Who will be the next pope? A probabilistic argument.

Technically untrue. St. Peter was obviously not European, and I understand there were a couple of other early popes who were African.
Roman North Africa was more a part of the European world than not.

I think the fans of the African cardinal are thinking in terms of a Chief Snapper from outside traditional Chrisendom.

Me? I don't care if he calls himself LateForDinner.

It's going to be the African because most of the world's Catholics are not European, and there has never been a non European pope, which is more than making the rest a little upset.

There have been non-European popes in the past, including Africans.

Which is irrelevant: the Catholic Church is not in the business of pleasing the world with its choice of pontiff. If anything, stating such a preference will incline the cardinals against that candidate, because they will wish to show how much they don't care for public opinion.

Certainly not something as irrelevant as the ethnicity of the pope, which is a complete nonissue for the hierarchy, which is by nature global in composition.

A better probabilistic argument would put more weight on recent and/or memorable popes' names.

/just saying.

Sure, but you don't do that in 20 minutes...

Darat,

I will bet you one stale British pint of fluid that would in civilized countries never be referred to as "beer", but unfortunately is in the former Danish colonies of the British Islands, that Ratzinger will be the next Pope...
