Who are these random names contacting me on Skype?

In the last week, I've got a couple of contacts from random individuals on Skype. Is this phase one for a phishing or 416 adventure?

I don't bother answering them, but I'm curious if anyone knows of anything specific about Skype that would attract them. Or is this just random crap that people do nowadays?

I recall getting something similar some time back (I don't use Skype much anymore; no particular reason except that my life has changed that I don't need this mode of communication anymore). Since all those contacts claimed to be hot young women, I dismissed them as phishing.

No, that's how hot young women get dates.

One of them claimed to be a Barrister. Another was a Russian CEO. I don't answer either of them. In fact, I got an email from someone on LinkedIn asking me to get on Skype so we could transact. Transact what, I don't know. I told him that I have Skype but it's not used - I can't have a phone conversation as I'm in a noisy streetside caffe all day and when the day ends, I'm dealing with my son's homework and getting him to bed and I'm not going to be doing business at those hours after a long day... but I'm an email kinda guy so if you want to discuss something, email me. Never heard back.

That's why I was wondering if it was something exclusive to Skype and they want the contact through there for some reason.

Alternately, pareidolia?

I have a Lucky Victor waiting for recognition, but no way of finding out anything about him. How are you getting messages from them?

Please bear in mind that I'm computer illiterate. I see my little Skype icon glowing and then there's a new "contact" in there, waiting to be acknowledged or whatever they expect you to do. Since I haven't given anyone the account/location and they use actual name (not necessarily real, of course) and they identify themselves in their names "Barrister JohnSmith, CEO VladImpaler", or whatever... so I just ignore them. There's no "Delete" button, so they just sit there. I suppose if I choose "Ignore", they might go away, but I want them active because I want to see if any of them repeat. Just curiosity.

Did you by any chance write "For a good time skype Foolmewunz" on a bathroom stall in a major international airport? That was recommended to me as a marketing tactic by an ex. It did not work out quite as I had hoped.

Too many calls from US senators?

It's spam, nothing more. You can go into your Skype privacy settings and disable notifications for everything but calls.
If you don't use Skype at all. just turn it off. Double-click on the icon to open it; go to Options/General setting, untick "Start Skype when I start Windows". Then go to Skype/Sign out & close

There ya go! I figure I might actually get around to using it for calls one of these days... it's very practical for people with friends in far-flung corners of the world, so I'll just whack 'em on the privacy settings. Thanks.

Just keep your eye out for those Brazilian supermodels.
