Merged Whitney Houston dead

Attention whores are the cutest thing. But pls be warned they are like tribbles - feed them and you get what you ask for.

That said, though I think it's sad frankly I care about this about as much as I care about any other stranger dying and will never get the celeb worship bit either. And pardon any offense to her big fans but cmon it's not like Paul McCartney or BB King or a giant of music just passed. She did have a very good voice and does still get credit for one of the best SB nat'l anthems ever sung though IMO.

48 is no age to die. (I am 48).

You don't have to be interested in her music or her as a woman to be sad that a talented person has died young, or to recognise that her death has an impact on others.

I think it's an awful age to die (I'm 48 also). She was tremendously talented but wasted it with drugs. Her version of the National Anthem still gives me chills. At least we still have that.

While I don't necessarily share it, not being a fan myself, I do understand the loss many feel when a celebrity dies, especially so young. I simply think of how I would feel if one of my favorite authors (Neil Gaiman or Terry Pratchett) were to die because of how much their talent and work enrich my life.

Also, even though not a fan in general, I do really like her version of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You

170 million albums isn't chump change, though. And as much as I hate it, she's been a huge influence on singing since she came along - unfortunately it's resulted in Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and the ghastly X-Factor type singers. No matter how bad you think that is, it's an influence that can't really be denied.

Ain't it shocking what drugs can do?

Too damn young.

ETA - Have to post a link to the National Anthem:

ETA 2 - A buddy of mine who is an ebay fiend noticed this:

It's always fun to watch people bid up to crazy prices for things on eBay when someone has just passed.
Photo signed and sold Feb. 9th - $14.99
Photo signed and sold an hour ago - $350.00
Album signed and sold Feb. 4th - $24.99
Album signed and sold an hour ago - $400.00

Hey, Look at what happened to Sci-Fi cinema since Star Wars' success. Just because a bunch of low-talent hacks try to copy a success, does not diminish the quality or talent of the artist that inspired them.

The first time I saw her in my childhood was in the colorful "How Will I know" video.

I consider her one of my early introductions to female beauty.

Did you call your boss?

No, he has already emailed me as he got the news some other way.

We're not sure what the channels will want us to do - she may be seen as a relic from the past who can be covered in a news special on Monday when everyone gets back to the office. But we are looking into what material we can dig up in case they want us to go to town....

VH-1 and MTV have not stopped their usual programming here. Basketballs Wives and Teen Mom, respectively (at least here in Los Angeles).

Just saw this on Facebook.

When Michael Jackson died my work went crazy (I work at MTV) and we had to rejig the schedules and put in loads of Michael Jackson videos.

The question I need to know is, do you think Whitney will be considered important enough for us to do the same? Or can I relax for the rest of this night shift?

I thought MTV burned all their music videos circa 1990.

Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, Etta James, and now Whitney Houston.
If this carries on there'll be no one left to sing at my funeral :(

We transmit seven MTV channels, plus VH1 and Viva just to the UK, plus another 20 or so channels across Europe. Some of them still play music videos, believe it or not (especially overnight).
