WHATTTT????? Oprah... ***BLEEP***

http://www.fi.edu/learn/brain/carbs.html

A balanced diet, with not TOO much sugar, is good for you. Doesn't matter how it tastes, it all ends up in the same place/places...

I agree. Of course, parents should not allow children who only want to eat cake and candy to eat as they wish, but total elimination of sugar is taking things too far. And what about this "Gluten free and Casein free" thing? Are those actual allergies or more woo?

As always, you have a sane middle ground and wackjobs on the opposing ends of the spectrum.

Ok this is clearly not my field, but I have to say I'm a bit skeptical so first of all correct me if I'm wrong or if I don't have the full premise clear: Is Oprah an authority for banning vaccines nationwide?

Is that what this is about? Is this something that could actually happen?
And if so, how? Because I happen to be very ignorant about some of the mechanisms of a society but this one sounds a bit bamboozling too me

Well, I don't think there is any imminent danger that vaccines could be banned, but by influencing large numbers of people in a democracy, there is a possibility that vaccines could be made optional and that enough people would opt out that preventable diseases could increase.

Again, in another post, the brain does not need that much sugar to run. I have know of this fact for a long time.

This book might help:

The brain's MAIN fuel source is GLUCOSE. It may not need "that much sugar"... whatever you mean by "that much", but it needs sugar. And nowhere have I ever said it needs "too much" sugar to make it "run". I think all the anatomy and biology courses in background are sufficient, thank you. I could read yet another book on this topic, but nah, thanks.

Are you being facetious? What is wrong with getting away from sugar as much as possible. Besides have you ever drank or eat anything with real sugar cane, there is a noticeable taste difference. Sugar cane tastes better.

McCarthy isn't endorsing something sensible, like cutting back on sugar to stay healthy, she's trying to cut out all "bad sugar", as defined by some crackpot food guru. When you're running around trying to eliminate all traces of processed sugars from your diet, and seeking out bizarre (and overpriced) alternatives at Whole Foods, that's not healthy, that's paranoia. This is similar to those people who go on fasts, in order to "cleanse" their bodies of "toxins". No responsible doctor is going to recommend this stuff. But it does satisfy a neurotic desire for control, and makes you feel like you're some kind of martyr to the cause of health...something that a normal, sane diet change won't do for you.

As for sugar cane...I've heard people swear up and down that the version of Coke made with cane sugar is far superior to the variety made with corn syrup. I've tried both, and the taste difference, if there actually is one, is negligable at best. I'd love to see the results of a double-blind taste test.

The recommended book is the "The Anatomy Coloring Book" -- not exactly the sort of thing with PubMed references. :boggled:

Does make you want to go up to her with a box of random cereal and say, "see, this is sweetened by fruit too! Look at all the fructose!"

Still it does not need much of it to function. At the moment do not remember the amount.
And your welcome.

She won't get it. She has no idea what fructose is.

It's like the time someone tried to sell me cream once, saying it was "chemical free". I replied that water is a chemical. She quickly claimed that there was NO water in her cream. I had to refrain from falling over in hysterical laughter.

Oprah is a publicity hound who will say anything if it gets her a mention on the nightly news. She's espoused all sorts of woo and woo books. Though she may have done some good in many things, she is the enemy of science.

I think Jenny McCarthy was on The Doctors, today. I only caught the very end, so I don't know what she said, nor what as said about her, but everyone was smiling, and I think a book about "healing" autism was vaguely promoted, so I suspect it was mostly on her side. I don't watch the show, I just noticed this in passing by a television that happened to be on.
