This poll asks “What” not “Why”, so there is no requirement to explain your vote.


ETA - For the purpose of this poll . . .

Theism = Belief in a god or gods
Atheism = No belief in a god or gods
The reasons people are either theists or atheists are of no importance to the definitions.

Believe = Don't know
Know = Belief is therefore negated and redundant.

I think I'm supposed to mark C, but B seems hard to distinguish.

"I know Neil Armstrong landed on the moon."
"I believe Neil Armstrong landed on the moon."

If I know it, don't I also believe it? What do I mark if I'm just as certain about gods as I am about Neil Armstrong?

I'm guessing it's supposed to separate out those who believe there is no god (know it) from those who lack belief in any god (believe it) but marking buttons based on that slim guess is too scary.

I also left out the definition of theism as well as I didn't think they would be necessary. Besides, some would argue there are no "actual definitions". But for those that think there are and for the purpose of this poll . . .

If you know, belief is negated. Belief is only required when there is a lack of knowledge.

Hint - I think you should vote Atheist type C (or stop saying "I know Neil Armstrong landed on the moon.")

And I thought it was only believers that conflate belief and knowledge :D

Holly crap! Two replies and I have to define theism and atheism as well as belief and knowledge. I'm glad I decided not to use the words gnostic and agnostic as well. :rolleyes:

I don't like the poll's wording.

Instead of "know" the proper scientific wording is, there is overwhelming evidence that gods are human generated fiction. You forced me to choose "believe" because facts are not technically how science describes things.

Therefore your poll results won't be accurate.
 
Voted type C. Thanks. If you'd just had a button for gnostic atheist, it would have been so much easier. :)

No, you omitted an entire definition, and its omission makes the poll ridiculous.

I am none of your contrived definitions.

I simply do not believe in 'god', a 'god', anyone's 'god', nor yet in any 'gods'.

One wonders at your agenda...

Don't think I've ever seen a single poll that pleases everyone.

As well as “there is overwhelming evidence that gods are human generated fiction“, there's also “No credible evidence of a god's actual existence” and “No scientific method by which a god could even possibly exist”, and “No scientific reason why a god should exist”. For the sake of brevity if nothing else, I'm happy to call all that “Know”.

But thanks for voting anyway :)

Follow: it is not that I beleive there is no 'god'.
It is, instead, that I do not believe that there is a 'god'.

Your lack of belief in a god or gods seems to me to be adequately covered by - "Atheist type A – I neither believe nor disbelieve a god actually exists".

Follow: "I do not believe in a god" isn't negatively affected by adding "nor do I disbelieve in a god". In fact if you did disbelieve in a god then you couldn't say "I simply do not believe in a god".

On those last two, not sure that's a clear wording either. There are some people who still hold to the non-overlapping magisteria POV. The claim is science doesn't test for faith based beliefs. I don't buy it, I think it's a passing fad to make peace with theist scientists.

That's why I said "No scientific method" and “No scientific reason". By "scientific" I mean "scientific method" not "scientists".
