I was thinking they could buy out MS, but ironically that might be blocked by anti-monopoly laws.

Even at the low inflation rates of 2% per year that cash is a $2 billion/year loss for the company in the balance sheet.

What to buy, what to invest in?

Personally, I think they should just convert all their facilities to renewable sources. No more energy bills. Ever. Not with that amount of money and investment. The excess energy they could just sell back to the grid and use for upkeep & replacement down the line.

At least it would be better than corporate mergers that rarely pay you back.

I have to think that they're already doing something with the money; it's not just stuffed under a mattress somewhere. I'll freely admit that I haven't checked into what they are doing and would be happy to be proven wrong.

It'd have to be one heck of a mattress. Seriously though, at some point their cash hoard was just sitting somewhere, gathering savings-account-like interest. Now they're at least paying a dividend and starting a share repurchase program.
