What screenplay is everone writing right now?

I would love to be considered in company with the great Chuck Palahniuk, but best be original. Perhaps Drink at Your Own Risk.

The Shanking ?

Blades all Gory ?

Faster Pussycat Stab Stab Stab! ?

One screenplay I started, but set aside when a couple other projects took off, is The Great Divide Barber Shop and School of Tonsorial Arts. It's about a group of out-of-work strippers who use their state-granted retraining funding to attend a small, struggling barber college, and go on to open a topless barber shop on the premises. Hilarity ensues as the state regulatory agencies try to close them down (but can't find a way), and the other barber/style shops -- faced with losing their customers -- try to shut them down as well, while the sleazy strip club owner who fired them tries to force them back to the pole.

No, I'm not joking. The first thirty or so pages actually exist.

I'm writing a TV pilot called "Cooper," about a mysterious database that allows one to see exactly where every person on earth was at a fixed date and time. The database also contains the full genetic code for each person as well as names and aliases.

I'd maybe call it "Person Of Interest". Sounds sinister...

The difference is that this database is available to anyone. Stalkers can use it to find their victims, terrorists can use it to find secret US forward bases, insurance companies can instantly identify all women with a genetic propensity for cancer. Adopted children can instantly find their birth parents. Whatever you can think of.

I started a script for an episode of Bones, but found that even having an in would not get an unsolicited screenplay from an amateur opened, much less produced. Then the plot stopped being "ripped from today's headlines" and became "ripped from headlines from a couple years back" and I lost interest.

Kind of like the Facebook of God?

Okay, sure. The protagonists are a Secret Service agent, an informations systems guy from Google, and a woman named Cooper who is the only person in the world not in the database.

Cool. So I take it that during the course of the series we learn bit by bit how Cooper avoided the database, or has she been deliberately removed?

I guess I'll have to wait and see...

As luck would have it, I'm taking a Screenwriting course next semester. Should be fun!

Yeah, that's the central mystery. Why isn't she in the database and what does that tell them about the creators?

I won't ask you to spoil it.

I won't.

I actually have no idea. One of the characters says of it that the db makers either didn't want to include her for some reason or couldn't include her for some reason. Either way, her absence calls attention to their limitations.

And that's as far as I've thought that through.

I think one question to look at might be: How do you know she is the only one? She might know of others, but is keeping it to herself for some reason. Wouldn't you?

ETA: I mean, if you were in her situation, there might be an advantage to be had by keeping silent about anyone else outside the system.

Yes, she does remain mysterious and there is definitely a feeling that she knows much more than she's saying.

She is, at least originally, the only person that can be identified who's not in the db. I won't rule out the idea that others may eventually be revealed.

In season 9, when I tell Entertainment Weekly that I had the whole series planned out from the beginning, you can point to these posts as evidence that I'm full of it.
