When Obama becomes President, and all the state polls suggest he will do just that, Obama should sit down with the leader of Iran, unconditionally, so he can give him the following message:

"Hello Mahmoud. How are you? Im here to lay it all out for you.
We want peace with Iran. We want Iran to become part of a thriving new Middle East. But you are doing things that not only make that difficult, but make the future of your country very bleak. We all know you have nuclear centrifuges. You have already stated that you seek to activate enough to create nuclear weapon grade material. You have constantly said bad things about Israel. You have kept IAEA inspectors from seeing nuclear sites. All of this makes the USA, Europe, and Israel...VERY NERVOUS. And the fact is, if you do not change course SOON, Israel will likely attack you.

We want peace with Iran. But if you do not shut down your enrichment program..or at the very least suspend the activation of new centrifuges..there is nothing we can reasonably do to ask Israel not to attack you. So, we offer you this. We offer you ALL the low grade nuclear fuel you need to power nuclear power plants. We offer you loan guaruntees to develop green industries and plants. We offer you diplomatic relations. All you MUST do, is suspend enrichment and/or suspend activating new centrifuges. This is our FINAL offer.

If you do this..we will prevent Israel from attacking. If you do not, we will in secret provide Israel with the use of Iraqi and Turkish airspace to attack you, and then after the attack, we will say "how regratable it is that Israel sought to take such actions". Meanwhile, we will defend Israel against any military action you might take against Israel in retaliation, and you know what that may mean."

So, Mahmoud, the ball is in your court. Choose the path of cooperation and diplomacy, and we are on your side. Choose the other path, and well, what can we say. We hope you enjoy wasting money cause thats what will happen with your nuclear enrichment investment.

Thank you, God bless, and have a lovely day"

Gee, in Summer there are elections in Iran. Obama may sit down with another guy.

With a wide stance, is that it?

I thought that in Iran homosexuality was frowned upon, to the point of now and again getting one's neck streched over it. :p

The problems with either option (bribe or bomb) have been much discussed in the last five years, so I will only rehash briefly.

Bribe option: the problem of trust, verification and compliance; the problem of perception among other nations (Middle East in particular, but really all) that under the NPT countries can come within a whisker of nuclear weapons, halt, and receive incentives while at the same time having/maintaining a nuclear "breakout" capability; the problem of loss of credibility in terms of deterring other nations; the problem of loss of credibility vis a vis bribing the "state sponsors of terrorism" (not to say that we have not made unsavory deals in the past, but it will be seen as operating from a position of weakness), etc.

Bomb option: the problem of targeting intelligence; the problem of destroying known facilities does not address knowledge base, people and covert facilities (and Israel does not have enough bombs to destroy all); the lack of plausible deniability (U.S. will be held responsible if Israel bombs); the inflaming of anti-American and anti-Israel sentiment even GREATER in the Middle East; etc.

No easy solutions. No glib statements. I hope Obama truly fathoms that this is not a nut which will be cracked easily with opening a dialogue.

I would think that for Iran to stop funding and supporting terrorsts groups like Hexbollah would be a minimum condition for a US Iranian rapproachment. If not, any deal would not last.
And I STILL think Iran is best dealt with with Diplomats at a lower level then the President until we know they are serious about wanting a real deal.
