Or we could increase the numbers allowed in the permanent, non-voting non citizen category for the 12-20 million illegals.

This category of immigrant is called "permanent residents". There's no fundamental need or requirement to increase quotas for the paths to citizenship. That's based on some crazy lame idea on "what's fair to the illegal alien" or some such nonsense.

I suspect, too, that such a measure would be illegal under NAFTA.

I'm not sure that'd matter. The U.S. has already established something of a track record for ignoring NAFTA whenever domestic politics makes it expedient to do so.

Costly virtual border fence in tatters

Reporting from Washington — The Department of Homeland Security, positioning itself to cut its losses on a so-called invisible fence along the U.S.- Mexico border, has decided not to exercise a one-year option for Boeing to continue work on the troubled multibillion-dollar project involving high-tech cameras, radar and vibration sensors.

The result, after an investment of more than $1 billion, may be a system with only 53 miles of unreliable coverage along the nearly 2,000-mile border.

So let's see … this "unreliable" alternative cost only $19 million a mile.

Say that 40' sections of steel 6x6" quarter inch wall were used and placed 8' in the ground for 32' above ground fence with 3" open space between posts on the diagonal.

Pretty nice fence.

Now how much would that cost? Including some totally ridiculous profit, wage levels and equipment costs, $1000 per foot or 5M/mile. There are 700 some miles of border, so right there is 3.5B.

How long would that take to construct?

A couple months max if the staffing was at the 5000+ man level.

I don't know about the fence, if it is just a fence it would be so easily penetrated and damaged, you would need a lot of people watching it too but it might be the only solution.

Its very simple:

1. Make it a felony punishable by 5 years in prison, to knowningly hire an illegal alien.

2. Make it a felony punishable by 1 year in prison, to not check the citizenship status of someone you hire.

3. Require ALL employers, even folks who hire babysitters, nannys, housekeepers, etc etc...to check the immigration/citizenship status of people they hire.

4. Set up a national employement eligibility free database with website, with social-security numbers, address and current photographs, of all Americans and legal residents who can work in the USA.

5. Build a triple layer chainlinked fence across the US-Mexico border.

6. Hire 10,000 more border patrol officers.

7. Streamline the process by which if State law enforcement officers discover that someone in custody for a criminal offence is an illegal alien, can be transfered to federal immigration officers.

8. Provide a $10,000 reward to anyone who successfully reports a business who knowningly hires illegal aliens, and $1,000 to anyone who successfully reports an individual who knowingly hires illegals.

Either we are ALL in this TOGETHER...or we all fail together.
