What Evidence Would Be Sufficient To Prove Reincarnation?

Iaca, my registration date reads 2009 because that's when I tried to registrate under this name but thought I'd failed, because I couldn't post anything and didn't get any confirmation. When I tried again, yesterday, to my surprise, the computer told me I was already registered under Illiadus, so I didn't have to do it all over again.

Iaca, is there anything I can do to stop these attacks, or would you prefer it if I left the forum? It's okay with me, because I don't have the energy to be insulted and then attacked again for defending myself.

Do you want me to quit the JREF forum?

Iaca, maybe I'm too eager to accomodate people, but I want to know what I can do to convince you that I
1) used to believe in reincarnation
2) don't anymore
3) believed it without really having a plausible explanation for it, or a theory of any kind

That's the problem with belief, you know, it's not rational. When you stop believing, you can't see what made you believe, because it was never based on reason.

I'm not getting it. You said you identified some logical flaws but now you say that you didn't even have a theory about it all, you just believed? How can there be any logical flaws if there's nothing behind it?

I didn't admit I used to believe in reincarnation because I didn't want people to hate me, but I might as well admit it now when everybody hates me anyway.

Bad choice. Nobody would have hated you for that. I'm fairly certain nobody's hating you know. We are just calling you on your BS. That's not hate.

ETA: Marduk kind of made up the number fifteen years, but I've read a lot of books and so forth for some years back.

Didn't you just say in this very post that you "believed it without really having a plausible explanation for it, or a theory of any kind"? What were those books about then?

It's not Iaca's place to say if you leave or stay. There seems to be a mixture of productive and combative participants in this thread, to enjoy the former you need a thick skin for the latter - or if you feel he/she adds nothing to the discussion and is just out for a cat-fight, use the ignore button.

OK, but even that would make it your second day, not your first! :p

To Iaca:

Yes, my second day. Sorry.

I just re-read what you quoted from my post and I realize saying "logical flaws" was a sloppy mistake on my part. I used the word in a vulgar, bastardized way.

What made me believe was the evidence, because I couldn't see any other explanation for it, even though I never liked the theories that came with it.

Later, when I became more skeptical, I read things that made me question the value of the evidence too, i.e. other explanations that didn't involve anything supernatural. The theories, which I didn't even approve of or understand as a believer, now makes even less sense to me.

I was really just embarrased to admit my past, on the JREF forum of all places, that's why I pretended to be the perfect skeptic.

It's quite unfortunate you feel like I'm attacking you. I'm not. I'm attacking your posts. Not the same.

Also, you can stop playing the victim. If you feel you're being attacked, insulted etc. there are forum rules against that. Use the report button.

Thank you, Floyt, but Iaca is not a troublemaker, just someone who wants to make sure the forum isn't abused or that people's time is wasted. I fully respect that, now.

I wish I could get logic, but it's all Greek to me. Math too.

Let's just get back to the topic, shall we?

So, is there a generally accepted definition of reincarnation we can work with?

Can we start with this?

What made me believe was the evidence, because I couldn't see any other explanation for it, even though I never liked the theories that came with it.
What was the evidence that made you believe?

What were the theories that came with it?

How about this one from Webster's?

"The doctrine that the soul reappears after death in another and different bodily form."

As for the definition .. from all types I've heard about .. karmic causality is only common aspect. I've heard theories without information transfer, and even without individual 'soul'. In that case one live can affect several others and be affected by several previous lives .. in a sense: if you will behave well, more people will born into good lives.
There are also many variants as what you can incarnate into. Buddhists have 6 realms of reality .. humans, animals, gods, hell, hungry spirits and fighting half-gods (sorry for my lack of correct terms). New age theories varies from 'human only' to 'everything including stones'.
But as was said .. he who want's to know must provide the definition he wants to know about. Or at least some specific quality, which can be discussed.
I'm not interested into any specific version .. I just want to know if there really is no paranormal at all. In such case practically any version of reincarnation would be interesting to me.

I'd like you to get used to the sceptical flavour here
it would help in future postings, everyone new gets burned slightly usually because of the way that they phrase things

you gotta remember, the average standard for woo claims here is :-
1. believer makes woo claim, often with poorly attempted misdirection *
2. believer refuses to listen to any advice
3. believer throws a tantrum gets 3 day suspension
4. believer sends insulting e mails to the mod team and gets banned

* i.e. believers often ask what would debunk a claim because they believe that their claim is genuine and are then upset when they find out their level of proof is below the required standard

take a look at this thread for an example of poor phrasing
