What Does Conservatism Offer?

  • Free markets
  • Less regulation
  • Peace through superior firepower
  • The knowlege that our enemies will not love them if we show them love
  • Free or freer speech
  • True progress (there is a reason why none of the faces on Mt. Rushmore are from the Democratic Party)
  • Making wealth instead of distributing wealth thus making more jobs
  • A political ideology that is not like a religion

Everything you believe is wrong. It is not the Neocons that are religious wack jobs. Liberalism is a faith. The reasons why religious people tend to be Neocons is because they already have a religion and liberalism is like a religion and that turns people off who have not given up on a faith they were raised to believe.

We already know conservatism offers platitudes, your repeating them here is unimpressive. Do you have any actual evidence or examples?

As for point number 6. "Conservative" has not always been synonymous with the Republican party. It it interesting and instructive to note that none of the people on mount Rushmore were conservative.

  • Free markets

Even though economists have long since concluded efficient markets are a more desirable goal.
  • Less regulation

Without no consideration whatsoever to how much regulation is needed or how to right-size regulation.
  • Peace through superior firepower

Even though that’s at odds with their notions of smaller government and lower spending.
  • The knowlege that our enemies will not love them if we show them love

And the lack of knowledge that if you try to impose your laws and regulations on them they will find ways to fight back regardless of how powerful you think you are.
  • Free or freer speech

Unless the speech in question is something they disagree with, then anything they can do to prevent that speech is fair game.
  • True progress

Of the kind that only exists in their imagination and flops miserably in the real world.

  • (there is a reason why none of the faces on Mt. Rushmore are from the Democratic Party)

Which is that when Mt Rushmore was carved Democrats were the Conservatives and Republicans were the Liberals.

  • Making wealth instead of distributing wealth thus making more jobs

And then making those jobs pay so little that the people doing them receive none of the wealth they are creating.

Even I as a Swede know enough about American political history to understand that this is a giant self-inflicted foot-wound. :D

Do not confuse Conservatism with Republicans and Liberalism with Democrats.

Conservatism & Liberalism are political philosophies. When I was very much involved with politics I met both in both political parties.

The Republican Party and Democratic Party are business, each working for a controlling share of the market. (Think Coke & Pepsi)

More like Coke and Diet Coke.

Even more like Diet Coke and Coke.

Could be.

I do like the Coke & Pepsi analogy though. Both are cola drinks. There are diehard Coke people (one political party) and diehard Pepsi people (the other party).

Though I prefer Coke, I’ll buy Pepsi if it is the better deal. (Independent!).

The idea that we could win the hearts and minds of Iraqis and Afghanis originates from the most misguided passel of conservatives this world has ever seen. What makes you think they won't try it again?

They are not conservatives. They are NEOconservatives. Descendants of card carrying Communists who hijacked the upper echelons of the Republican party with cold hard cash.

Long before the wall fell American commies saw the handwriting on the wall.

So what is the difference between a "conservative" and a "neoconservative"? Pointing to actual policy statements or implemented policies would be preferred to rhetoric.

Neo-Conservative is Republican speak for Conservatives who enacted policies that have already failed, where Conservative is reserved for policies that are merely doomed to fail.

Conservatism is the belief in established traditions as a hard-won storehouse of wisdom. It should be changed, and only slowly and with great debate.

Liberalism is the belief that society needs large breaks with the past to save itself from itself.

Things like gay marriage, or abortion before it, or minority rights before it, can't come into being until a critical mass of society gets behind it. Only then can a handful of vanguard judges try to declare a change, legislating from the bench, or would Congress even dream of passing different laws.

At that point, people play mind games with themselves that, golly, everyone opposed is evil incarnate. Yet only a few years earlier, any politician saying that would get their hat handed to them at the next election.

What one takes from this is to just keep pushing on those ideas if you want to change them. "Liberalism" as harbinger of change only precedes conservatism by a few years or a decade. Many states were liberalizing abortion laws by conscious decision and legislation when some judges decided critical mass had been achieved and they changed things for all.

As far as spending goes, Bush, Jr., increased spending a lot, especially near the end of his term. This is a liberal position, and he was called on it at the time.

I find it interesting that you call conservatism "bankrupt" insofar as the politicians deviate from it into liberalism.

If the current batch of ""conservatives"" are what they have become, ie: stark raing nuts, they shoul be outlawed and soon.
