I did start my post by saying I was limiting my discussion to income taxes. The perfect form of fairness is that each person pays for exactly what they use, no more, no less. Since this is totally impractical for everything that the government provides, taxes based on income or consumption have to be used.
Your scenario is unfair if the higher payer doesn't get 10,000 times the amount services from the government as the lower payer. The problem is that the left wants to make it even more disproportionate and unfair while claiming just the opposite.
I'm sorry, I think you missed my point completely. I was trying to show that your complaint:
Neally said:The top 20% of income earners paid 70% of federal taxes. Meanwhile, 46% of taxpayers don't pay any federal income tax.
is invalid as it only considers half of the relevent data. In my example where I earned paid $20,000 in taxes and you only paid $2, using your parlance above comes to
Lurker Example said:The top 50% of income earners (me) paid 99.9% of federal taxes. Meanwhile, 50% of taxpayers (you) paid less than 0.1% of taxes.
The percentages you quoted are meaningless without including how much of the total income they earned. My example country populated by you and I illustrates this concept.
