This hypothesis does not explain why these supposedly economy-based voters aren't more upset upon discovering that Trump isn't actually going to do anything to fix prices. Instead, his first actions in office have emphasized things like getting rid of DEI and Equal Opportunity Initiatives, tossing out complaints about anti-LGBT book bans in schools, and revoking birthright citizenship for the children of immigrants.

Give it more than seven days, maybe? I'm sure they'll be pissed off soon enough when they still can't afford both rent and food.

I think they are trying to tell us the reason Democrats lost is because they didn't run on Republican ideas.

But I'm wondering. If enough Democrats in a safe red state like Florida actually voted, would it be enough to swing the state? Or does the electoral college maths make that forever impossible? I'm not asking about electoral borders and gerrymandering, or voter suppression or intimidation, I'm just asking about the numbers. Could there be sufficient votes to swing the state?

Electoral college math has no bearing on which way the state vote swings. Rather, the state's popular vote determines which way the state's electors swing.

I thought you said that people already couldn't "afford their bill" and that this was why they voted to "change horses". How much longer than seven days are we supposed to wait before we get to call it that this was bs?

Because none of it is the Republicans' fault, it's residual effects of the Biden presidency.

In any case the right wing media and social media will be telling them that they're actually a lot better off now than they were under the Biden administration and opinions are so malleable and memories are so short that enough people will believe that message.

That's a think tank, not the Biden administration. And again, that used to be a fairly centrist position.

I asked them within the context of the conversation we were already having. I'm not moving the goal posts, I'm staying on topic.

The title of the thread is "What Did the Democrats Do Wrong?" You blamed "progressive policies" but only provided a link to a think tank, not anything the Democrats actually did. Hell. the think tank you linked to is fairly center left/liberal. Not especially progressive.

Democrats lost because of the policy positions of an organization unrelated to the Democratic party is the dumbest of all takes, and once again, reveals the deeply flawed and disingenuous premise of this whole thread.

Because some states have populations that are so skewed to one side or the other that the likelihood of the state as a whole ending up with a different outcome is effectively nil.

California, for example, has had voted blue for most of my life. And by really big margins. This last election they were like 60% for Harris. The margin is so large that a significant number of people don't even have to turn out, because it's so extraordinarily unlikely that the outcome could be anything other than a Dem win. It's statistically implausible. Same thing for West Virginia, but replace Dem with Rep.

I just don't feel like playing this partisan game. This isn't a mystery, it's not shrouded in confusion. In the words of James Carville (yes I had to look it up) "The Economy, Stupid".

Dems have been in control for four years, and to the average person, everything in their bank account has gotten worse. So they swap out the party that hasn't been effective in their eyes, and will try the other for a while. But nobody expects everything to magically turn around in a week. Which is why I said give it a bit, and if people's ability to afford their basic lives hasn't improved, they'll be pissed at Republicans too.

So there should be another addition to "what did the Dems do wrong?" poll--namely, they didn't do enough to counter voter supression tactics.
