What could possibly go wrong with this?

I think some here may be Holocaust opportunists.

Ive seen no evidence that TFT is a Holocaust denier.

Nice personal attack though. Very productive. Must have been the head of your debating team.

What could go wrong is that the german army is a real army that is likely to respond to being shot at (deliberately or otherwise) by shooting back in an effective maner.

They sure don't do any shooting in Afghanistan

About freaking time one of the best professional military forces got a bit more involved in boots on the ground operations.

The time for crybabies to tell us they can't trust German soldiers not to revert to Nazi thugs has been over for a long time.

Let them bear some of the expense in blood, not just treasure, for this peace keeping stuff.

About damned time.

To PM Merkel:

You go, girl!

Have you ever seen "the ditch" in LA? It is a trench through the heart of the city where a below-grade railroad right-of-way allows train traffic to pass though without interacting with autos or pedestrians in any way.

What if a trench were dug between the two, and a rail line installed, and provision for later installation of electric power transmission lines and pipelines made?

We are talking a 25 mile trench, and so it is a buildable thing. Might be cheaper for the international community to make a gift of it than to keep having to deal with the consequences of doing nothing.

It's funny, my major concern about the situation has always been the separation of the West Bank and Gaza. I had never even thought of something like this, but it's rather obvious, and a perfect solution. I think an underground passage would be better than a trench however, for security reasons.

It's a great idea. I personally would be happy to contribute to building it.

Well, thanks!

My thought was that you install a screen-wire "roof" to it that would be electrified and would have ground-fault sensors such that if it were touched or cut that an indication would be made in a nearby security post. Then you don't have to worry about vents, or covert tunnels being made out from a covered trench as you can LOOK in at any point. Overpasses should be armored from below so bombing them from within the trench would not be practical.

If you did cover it, you'd pretty much have to electrify the railway so there are not diesel fumes to deal with, and install cameras throughout, and then you have the issue of who maintains the cameras.

I would put the rail yards and facilities in the West Bank just for land availability reasons.

That is an excellent idea.

At TOP I half-jokingly made a suggestion about building a deep (below the water table) ditch along the Gaza-Egypt border which could be filled with sea water. The water prevents tunneling (because the tunnels would flood) and the excavated dirt could be used to build a berm on the Egyptian side.

But the more I think about it, something like that may actually be doable.

I like it too. But the connection needs to be made wide enough to avoid congestion in the future. Also the right of passage has to be guaranteed and enforced, otherwise Gaza and the West Bank remain seperated at Israel's whim.

I don't see why Israel should have to keep it open if the Palestinians use it to attack Israel.

With a screen-wire roof as BenBurch described it can't be used to attack Israel from.

But the reason why right of passage has to be guaranteed and enforced is simple: Without it, Israel can not be trusted to not close the corridor whenever it desires to pressure the Palestinian state for whatever reason.

A state that can be cut in two at any time, at the whim of another state, is no more than a puppet. Such an outcome leads inevitably to continued Palestinian resistance, and hence doesn't solve Israel's problem.

You might like it but those now in charge of the west bank less so. Last thing they want is hamas haveing easy acess to the west bank.

At least the Germans got over ghettoizing people and persecuting them based upon their race/ethnicity.
That is a very precious description of history. Are you also a holocaust denier?

Interesting response.

You don't seem to have much knowledge of 20th Century history. The Germans, orto be more accurate the Nazo regime embarked upon a policy of removing Jews and other groups out of German society by increased persecution and eventual ghettoisation before they stepped up to the vile industrialized slaughter known as the Holocaust.

You really need to know that the Jews and others weren't suddenly whisked off to the gas chambers out of the blue without any precursory persecution.

I can only assume your question asking me if I'm a Holocaust denier stems from your lack of knowledge.

And can you explain what you mean by "re you also a holocaust denier?"

'also' to what?

Um, how can Gaza and the West Bank not be separated? Are you expecting Israel to project itself into the fifth dimension and create a wormhole between the two?

Gaza and the the West Bank was connected by a crossing point by the UN partition plan. That was before Israel decided to continue it's long term plan of expansionism.

Berlin - Germany welcomed Wednesday a proposal by Egypt's President Hosny Mubarak for a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, and supporters of Chancellor Angela Merkel suggested German peacekeepers be sent to Gaza.

I would welcome German peacekeepers going to Gaza -- if they agreed to take charge of stopping Hamas rocket attacks.

They could paint "V2" on the missiles and confiscate them as German property

germans....french..british...irish..who the hell cares?

as long as they are there and do their job....it doesnt matter what their nationality is.

though the idea of German troops protecting Israelis is thought provoking.
