"We have decided to add a whale burger to our menu due to strong demand from our customers and feel very thankful to the whales for allowing us to make the burgers..."

I doubt that the whale is as thrilled about participating as is the shop manager...

Japanese fast food chain launches whale burgers Thu Jun 23, 9:59 AM ET

A Japanese fast food chain said it would sell 200 whale burgers a day to meet strong demand from its customers amid global criticism over the country's bid to expand whaling.

Burger chain Lucky Pierrot, which runs 10 shops in the northern island of Hokkaido, said the burger using minke whales caught under Japan's controversial "research" whaling program was selling like hotcakes.

"We fry minke whale meat and the burger really tastes like beef," manager Miku Oh said.

"We have decided to add a whale burger to our menu due to strong demand from our customers and feel very thankful to the whales for allowing us to make the burgers," she told AFP.

Twenty whale burgers, each priced at 380 yen (3.5 dollars), will be sold from Thursday at each of the chain's 10 outlets.

The launch of the whale burger came as the International Whaling Commission on Thursday rejected a bid by Japan to resume commercial catches of minke whales in the Pacific Ocean.

Japan, which calls anti-whaling campaigners disrespectful of its culture, kills whales as "research" under a clause in a 1986 moratorium.

Japan is campaigning for a full-scale return to commercial catches, saying whale stocks have recovered sufficiently during the 19-year ban.

It also plans to double its hunt of minke whales and to resume killing endangered fin whales and vulnerable humpbacks, despite fierce opposition by an alliance led by Australia.

Oh said the restaurant was aware of global criticism over Japan's efforts to expand research whale hunting but argued eating whale meat was part of the country's traditional food and should be treated with respect.

"We value our whale food culture and would like to offer it to our customers. We have a long tradition of eating whale meat as a port in Hakodate used to be a major whaling hub," she said, referring to the major port city in Hokkaido, some 800 kilometers (496 miles) north of Tokyo.

Earlier this year, most schools in Wakayama, Japan's western whaling heartland, resumed whale lunches which had gone off the menu amid global anti-whaling campaigns.

Hoping children will take a liking to whale, the schools have served the meat in burgers and marinated it in sweet and sour sauce.

The manager's quote reminded me of the scene in Restraunt and the End of the Universe (or was it the Hitchhiker's Guide?) where the talking dinner marketed its taste virtures to the diners...

Whale meat looks a bit like liver, when unthawed. The moment it is heated, it looks like beef. It has a slight tranny taste, but it isn't too pronounced.

It's very good, actually. Very tender.

Could you explain what 'tranny taste' is. Normally I would google it, but I think in this case I'll pass.

A tranny taste? Very good? Very tender?

I would have suspected the tender part but I doubt the good part. To each their own. You are who you are AND THAT'S OKAY!

Sorry, I wasn't thinking.

"Tran" is Danish for "whale oil".

So, essentially, as a description for the uninitiated, you are saying that whale meat tastes like whale. Very helpful. Thanks.:p

Questions Claus refuses to answer:

* who is the first tranny you tasted?
* how many tranny's have you tasted?
* which parts of the tranny did you taste?
* do all of these parts taste the same?
* was oil ever used during this tasting?
* who provided the oil?
* was money exchanged before, during, or after the tasting?
* Did you have a whale of a good time with the tranny?
* would you say these tranny's were whale sized?

Post your evidences, Claus.

He's probably busy eating lutefisk and blubber nuggets.
While getting rubbed down with tranny oil, no doubt.

"Whale Burgers...Yum!"

...and as has been pointed out before, the death of the last whale will not be its tragedy, it will be ours. And sooner or later, one way or another, will we pay for the living hell we are making this earth.
But I'm not too fond of canonising the whale. All animals suffer. It strikes me as somewhat hypocritical to harp on about the death of whales (not that anybody hereis doing that), given the billions of animals we bring into the world, for no other purpose than killing.

They eat whales, shock horror!

I can't speak for the Dane, but in Norway, 'tran' is cod liver oil, and whale meat can taste, well, hmm, 'tranny' :D

But only if it's not prepared right. If prepared right, it tastes exactly like beef, only more tender.

In Norway, we've been eating whale meat and whale burgers for a looong time.

Thank goodness for the Japanese since thier scientists started work we have had no repeat of the disasterous whale plagues of the 70's....I remember the ocean thick with whales...impossible to go to the beach without getting pesered by unemployed delinquent whales...thank jeebus for Japanese scientific research into what whales taste like.
