Weird claim about Mormons, dog bites, and heaven

My sister just told me a very strange story. A few years ago she was visited by Mormon missionaries and spent more than a few hours chatting with them. I had known this. What I didn't know was that her extremely high strung dachshund, Felix, actually bit one of them. (Felix had pretty strong opinions about people. I think the Mormon lad may have smelled of cats or something.) Of course sis was apologetic and horrified, but apparently the missionaries were overjoyed. The claim was made that when a Mormon missionary is bitten by a dog, that somehow correlates with him going to heaven.

I thought maybe it was just something along the standard lines of "if you get persecuted that's a good sign," but she insists that the claim was specific to dog bites.

Has anyone heard of this or something like it?

He was cremated and I believe they buried the ashes at our parent's cottage. It's a good place for squirrels, raccoons, skunks, wild birds and other things of interest to crazy little dogs.

Maybe they just had to make up some reason why god won't protect them from dogs during their good and oh-so-necessary work? A lot of them must get bitten, after all. It must mean....oh, every time a Mormon gets bitten by a dog, an Angel gets Holy Underwear! :D

I'm slow...bury the dachshund? Where in the OP did it say the dog died, and why does its burial have any importance to the story?

Did I miss an in-joke or something?

I assume that this

(Felix had pretty strong opinions about people. I think the Mormon lad may have smelled of cats or something.)

was taken as an indication that the dog is now in the past tense.

But what its burial place has to do with the subject is beyond me.

Is there is a special section of the Pet Cemetery reserved for valiant little Doggies who bite Mormons?

The doggy is indeed deceased. This was a few years ago. Anyhow I figured the implication was that the Mormons would have been unable to resist doggy murder, but I answered the question seriously. According to the vet, he died of a heart problem.

There might be, historically, a real correlation between Mormons getting bitten by dogs, and going to heaven (or at least, departing this world). Rabies, for example.

Respectfully,
Myriad

I was a mormon missionary (atheist now) and I've never heard of anything like this. I would suspect that this was a kind of inside joke between the missionaries that was misunderstood by your sister.

This, most likely.

My wife was an LDS missionary (Tennessee), and she developed a slight phobia of dogs from her time in the field. Because missionaries spend a lot of time "tracking" door to door, there are no end of friendly and unfriendly dogs that tend to great them. There are also, according to my wife, no end of dogs being set loose on missionaries (very Christian in our Christian America!). I'd guess it was something the two missionaries came up with as something of a joke.
