Weekend at Feinstein's

I am actually unsure why some of our aged politicians hang on for so long... is it just vanity? They have a pretty damned good pension plan after all.

There is lots of reasons. Vanity is definitely among them. Being a United States Senator is great. They are kings in half the rooms they enter. They have staffs that waits on them day and night. The staffs do almost all the work.

That all disappears the moment they retire.

Power. The kind of person who successfully claws their way into one of the most powerful clubs on the planet isn't the kind of person who resigns their club membership voluntarily.

I agree with both of these. Giving up that kind of power and position is not an easy thing for most people.

Getting into that position isn't an easy thing for most people.

But most people are convinced that the sociopaths they voted for are different from the sociopaths they voted against.

Damn. Just as I agree with you on something, you have to go and post this.

Exactly Stacyhs. I don’t think Feinstein or McConnell are sociopaths. Staying too long at the party is a common faux pas.

I don’t agree with McConnell on much. I do think he is a Machiavellian hypocrit. But I felt bad for him yesterday. Father time has caught up with both of them. It's hard to face that clock that is ticking on all of us.

Not everyone wants to retire in multiple fields, multiple occupations. It's a human thing. I wouldn't have retired if I didn't have to. I was almost 70, probably should have retired a couple years sooner but only to help my clients transition to other alternatives. As it was I had a sudden illness and could not do what I'd been doing. So it was a scramble to help people set up their procedures to do in-house what I'd been contracted to do for them.

I worked for the Democratic Party in 1980. I helped setting up campaign events.for various Democratic candidates. This included a SenatorTed Kennedy visit. A Senator Paul Tsongas visit, VP Mondale, President Jimmy Carter visit and others.

Washington Senator Warren Magnuson was up for reelection that cycle. Maggie was a Washington State institution. He had been serving in the US House of Representatives and the US Senate by that time for 47 years. He could barely walk. He was also a heavy drinker. He was transported everywhere by wheelchair. Because of how that looked Maggie was put in a position where that could be hidden from the public. But to be honest he looked like a frail old man. Still his mind was sharp.

The Junior Senator from Washington at the time was 15 years younger, active and seemed healthy as a horse. That was Henry "Scoop" Jackson. Scoop died two years later and Maggie lived on for another nine.

Feinstein's daughter has power of attorney over the ailing Senator

The two lawsuits were filed by Katherine Feinstein, 66, Senator Feinstein’s only child, who has power of attorney over her mother’s legal affairs. The first lawsuit, over the beach house, says the property is in disrepair, that Senator Feinstein no longer wishes to use it, and that she wants to sell it this summer or fall.

Rest of the article is a real bummer, family fighting over Feinstein's considerable fortune and not even having the decency to wait for her to die first.

She's dead

Senator Dianne Feinstein has died at 90 years old, ABC7 Insider Phil Matier has confirmed. Her career was one of many firsts. She was the first woman president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, the first woman mayor of San Francisco, and one of two of the first women elected to the U.S. Senate from California.

Sad that she will probably be remembered best for being the decaying corpse that refused to retire, but that was entirely her decision.

Can't help the feeling that this is what everyone has been hoping for.

The timing is REALLY bad, with a shutdown looming and House Republicans trying to make massive cuts to certain programs. Right now, the Senate is effectively split 49-49 plus Sinema as the wildcard.

"Oh noes something somehow went wrong YET AGAIN with our cunning plan of having our margin of safety in having a clear majority over an evil death cult being one 90+ year old woman with multiple health issues."

Relax! The burden has been shifted to a squad of 89 year-olds. All is well.

only if you think that Feinstein would have been able to vote, and then remember to vote the right way.
