My dear friend Sue - the sweetest woman you would ever meet - is dying of brain cancer. It didn't start out that way, though; She first had Melanoma in the mid 90s, and thought she was through it. Then she had a recurrence in 2005, and it was a rough time but she got through, and now this. A few cells lived and metastasized, and the deterioration was first noted only two weeks ago. Now she cannot speak.

It was all those years of being a hippie and a nudist with no sunscreen.

Wear sunscreen.

Every person (4, Jim, Pat, Bruce, and Gil) that I've known to die of brain cancer was a heavy drinker. Yes, it does seem to go fast, 3 weeks from diagnosis to eulogies for Jim.
 
Three weeks isn't fast enough for me, if I were on the dying side.

That said, I'm preemtively sorry for your inevitable loss.

Sunscreen is only tested (SPF) as a deterrent to sunburn. Depending on the formula, it blocks some of the UV.

Or stay in the shade as much as possible when practising nudism and wear something to cover the skin when out in the sun for long periods.
 
Better yet, wear a hat.

In Australia we have a lot of sun, and a (quite successful) advertising campaign called 'Slip, Slop, Slap'. Slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen, and slap on a hat.

Dont forget to reapply sunscreen periodically. It wears off quite quickly.

Sorry about your friend, that is pretty rough all right.

But are you sure about the sunscreen stuff? I would think that sunscreen would not do much of anything to prevent brain cancer.
 
As BenBurch said, if it metastasized it could well have ended up in the brain. Skin cancer, particularly melanomas, are well known for metastasizing.

As for whether sunscreen works - I have no particular doubts. I don't see any particular reason to doubt it given the known risk factors of skin cancer (and referring back to the mention of Australia's campaign, I believe their skin cancer rates are now dropping?).
 
Sunscreen is a tricky one. Firstly, something many people don't realise is that all sunscreens have two different ratings, one for UV-A and one for UV-B (there is also UV-C, which refers to even shorter wavelengths, but it is mostly absorbed in the atmosphere and not considerd for sunscreen). UV-A has longer wavelengths, and therefore less energy, than UV-B, however, it penetrates skin easily. It does not cause sunburn, but is responsible for most of the damage. UV-B is higher energy, but does not penetrate the skin effectively. It is UV-B that is responsible for sunburn, and so this is easiest to measure protection.

The most basic way of measure the protection factor of sunscreen is to apply it to a volunteer and see how long they take to burn. It is also possible to make similar measurements with a spectrometer, although I'm not sure if this is particularly common. The important point is that this only measures protection in the UV-B range, since the effects of UV-A are essentially invisible. Since it is this measurement that is displayed as the SPF on sunscreen, you don't really know if you're actually preventing damage.

Because of this, there are various systems to rate UV-A protection, but they are not particularly widespread, and some, the Japanese system for example, are of questionable use. In Britain, there is a simple star system, from one to five stars, that describes the ratio of UV-A to UV-B protection and is now used by the majority of producers. However, while this allows you to rate one sunscreen against another, the actual protection afforded is harder to find out. I don't know if there is any UV-A rating at all done in the US.

What all this means is that it is entirely possible to have sunscreen with a very high SPF that actually provides very little protection from damage, it simply prevents the cosmetic effects. Rather than just using sunscreen and assuming you're safe, it's important to check that it's actually effective against UV-A, otherwise it can be worse than not wearing anything, since you will tend to spend longer in the Sun.

And this comes to the other big problem with sunscreen. If you wear it, you're likely to stay in the Sun longer. You can use the best sunscreen in the world, but if you stay in the Sun ten times longer, you'll still end up worse off than wearing nothing. This is an argument made for a lot of safety equipment like bike helmets and seatbelts, however, studies show that melanoma, and death rates from melanoma, really do increase in areas with more sunscreen use.

Which of course brings up the final problem. Is rubbing funny chemicals into your skin good for you? There is certainly a problem with allergic reactions and sensitive skin. Although there are hypoallergenic sunscreens, some people can't use any. And of course, since increased sunscreen use correlates with increased cancer, cause and effect can't be ignored. As far as I am aware, there is no good evidence that anything in sunscreen is in the least harmful, despite plenty of speculation from the usual suspects. However, widespread sunscreen use is a fairly recent phenomenon, and the field is devolping constantly with new substances being used, so while it is probably completely safe, the possibility of adverse effects can't be ignored.

As Devnull says, wear a top and a hat. You can still burn through clothes, especially light, summery ones, but a physical barrier will always be better than a chemical one. However, you will find it harder to ask for massages.
 
In Sue's case (and all other nudists) I don't think sunscreen would have kept her in the sun longer. Pictures from her 20s show her literally nut-brown from head to toe. I believe that sunscreen might have made all the difference in her case.

This is sad in so many ways. She is still married to the guy she fell in love with when she was 20. He is going to be devastated.
 
I have read that your genetic makeup has a lot to do with whether you will develop skin cell cancer from sunburn. And is it the sunburn that causes the cancer to develop or merely exposure to the sunlight itself? If the first, it seems that a natural tan sans sunburn, although causing premature wrinkles, would be the bodies way of preventing further sunburn. If the latter, I would opt for as much skin cover via clothing as possible, and head hair, using the suncream sparingly on my hands and forehead. Those chemicals listed as ingredients scare me. I have no idea if some of them are being absorbed through the skin like DMSO
My sister died of metasisized cancer that spread to multiple organs including her brain. What haunts me was the utter change in personality in her final days

Sunburn is caused by UV-B, the damage is caused by UV-A.

Thanks for the clarification. Two more questions: Does suncreen interfere with the vitamin D thingie that the sun and skin do? Is it really necessary to get and/or process Vitamin D from the sun at all? Can't we just drink milk?
