Washington State AWB

As noted, the “patrol rifle” has effectively replaced the old standard “riot gun” for oh, 20 years now.
This all began with the North Hollywood Bank Robbery incident where police were confronted with heavily-armored robbers wielding fully-automatic rifles.
They actually had to borrow rifles from a nearby gun shop to confront the criminals.

As well, the adoption of the “active shooter” training which is by now universal, and as we saw in the recent bank mass-shooting and the recent school shooting… Officers so armed were able to deal effectively with the shooters.

Police have to be equipped to handle such incidents, as well as the possibility of terrorist attacks. Our “campus police” organization has been issuing and training with the AR-platform rifles for years now.

As to the proposed AWB…. I fear that it will rapidly be challenged and likely fail. The big problem, as with other such legislation, is that it’s focused on the cosmetic appearance of the firearm rather than it’s actual function. There are literally millions of AR-platform rifles in America… It’s been described as “America’s Rifle”.
They are available in multiple configurations, and a separate industry of accessories and parts is flourishing.
Weapons with very similar capabilities are, and will be… Readily available.

Semi automatic rifle allows police to take on shooters from a much further distance than handgun. Keeps the police officer safe and increases the chance of taking down the bad guy, therefore protecting the people.

It also allows bad guys to stay safe and take down lots of innocent bystanders.

Also - who wants a grenade launcher and why? And why the hell is anyone letting them have it?

I have no problem with enhanced restrictions on AWs, such as registration with the NFA.

They want them for the appearance. They won't actually launch grenades, only flares. As survival signals. Sort of.

If you mean 37mm: oh yeah, they'll launch grenades. Just no one industrially produces grenades for them (unlike 40mm). As soon as you possess any sort of anti-personnel round a 37mm launcher becomes a destructive device. That includes "less lethal" rounds.

I think 40mm's are pretty strictly verboten.

On the contrary, police do need semi-auto weapons that fire 223 Winchester rounds. Especially because many criminals have these and often full auto handguns or rifles. Police also need to be able to deal with heavily armed bank robbers, terrorists, mass shooters, etc. Arming them with 6-shooter revolvers is absurd.

As much as I can be critical of US Police, it'd be unfair to expect them to go after an active shooter armed with a 5.56mm or 7.62mm semi-auto rifle, and possibly plate armor, when they themselves are only armed with 9mm Glocks etc and Kevlar that will not stop a rifle round.

This is true, but we used to have special cops trained with weapons and tactics for the rare cases when such things were required.

Not every cop should be SWAT.

And SWAT should be rarely deployed.

The comparison of many modern US law enforcement agencies to an occupying force is fair.
