Was this really necessary?

Who says you have to be "religious" to believe in a heaven?

Sure. So would 1 street sign, in a small neighborhood.

by saying honoring religion i meant to be polite and not say the seem to be honoring ******** myths instead of those that really deserved it, the firefighters.

One must OPPOSE on all fronts, but fighting on all fronts is only an option if you have unlimited resources.

I'm not against taking an unpopular stand on principle, but I think that should be saved for matters where the stakes are higher.

How do the families and colleagues of all those other firefighters who died in the course of duty (but during less newsworthy incidents) feel about their sacrifices being officially ignored?
Probably happy for the recognition. Most of us in the fire service recognize the ultimate sacrifice that our New York bretheren made that day. Our families recognize that that was a unique event, that hopefully will never need be repeated. Dying in the line of duty is NOT what any firefighter wants to do, but even those of us who are ground support know that it could happen, especially in a situation like 9-11.

I am an atheist, and I don't have too much of an issue with the sign. Like someone else posted, I'd prefer a more religion-neutral sign, but that's not what was proposed.

And to the "fighting on all fronts", that's just strategically dumb. You only fight the battles that, if you lose them, you won't be setting precident. When the NY Atheists lose this, it'll open the door a little bit more for more religiously themed street memorials. This is a trivial matter and shouldn't have been taken on.

on a personal level, triforcharity, thank you for your service.

Wow. Just......wow.......please try to follow along. Specifically, read the OP.

So you were addressing the OP?

That would be 'addressing someone in the thread'

You come across as very angry. Perhaps if you calmed down a little you'd be able to communicate what you mean without so many people misinterpreting what you're trying to say?

Just a suggestion.

Your suggestion is idiotic at best. I was discussing the athiests in NYC suing the NYC governement over a sign. Please follow along. Notice I wasn't responding to anyone in this thread, nor did I quote someone and respond to it.

Thanks for your concern though. When you have 343 of your close friends die in a terrorist attack, then you can tell me how I should feel.

Thanks though.

(Warning- VERY biased rant ahead. All the athiests here are free to attack me, and call me a fool, etc. etc. etc. IDGAF. )

Why the **** do Athiests think that this is inciting some type of religion? Many different religions believe in some type of afterlife.

Speaking from personal experience, most firefighters believe in some religion or another. In NYC, it's mostly Catholic, with a few other religions.

Now, this sign is honoring 7 firefighters who gave the ****** lives to save others.

How about you pick some other battle? (Translation- **** off. )

(I am retired FDNY, who survived 9/11, and knew all of these guys personally. If you want to fight for something, stop using paper and coin money in the USA. It has the word God on it. Go fight that. Leave the ****** sign alone FFS. It's honoring 7 heros who gave their life "So that others may live. )

(End Rant)

Ummmm........I'm atheist and I agree with you. Don't lump me in with all the others. Or should I call you some crazy suicide bomber and lump you with all the crazy theists?

This is embarrassing and petty to me. These are the kinds of atheists who would tell a dying child that they'll be worm food and there's no heaven.

What? They're mad about the one tenth a penny they spent on taxes going towards this? I'll reimburse them so they can STFU.

Seconded

Keep it civil please.

I didn't. But, I will however say that I wasn't very specific in my post, and I apologize.

You could, but it wouldn't make it true. But, it wouldn't matter anyway, because I never accused you, or any other poster here of being cut from the same cloth.

Thank you. :)

I wonder if the families haven't already paid for the sign? It's not like they're all that expensive.

I didn't take it personal. I've probably gotten lazy tons of times and just said "theists" instead of specifying specific ones. :p

But seriously, that sign cost what? Like $1000 to make and install? 10% of the population atheist? I would donate $100 to that sign so no other atheist has to pay if I could.

Cause I know my money is going to honor those firefighters, not to preach religion.

This type of lawsuit and dishonoring the dead like this runs dangerously close to that one church that protests funerals. There's probably tons of religious epitaphs in Arlington National Cemetary and crosses on various gov't paid graves to honor those deceased. These are Western burial customs, simple as that.

Why not just call it "In Honor of Seven" instead of "Seven in Heaven" ?

Notice I didn't address any of the athiests in this thread? How's that go? "For crying out loud, learn how to read?
After reading your replies to everyone else who objected to your rant, I take back my criticism of your reading abilities. Instead, you should learn how to write.

I defy you to show in your rant where a reader could know that you were targetting only the atheists who were suing over this stupid sign. Please.

I bet that sign costed no more than $200. Most cities have their own sign shops, or contract with a company for so many, it keeps the price very low.

How about this one. I will hilite the relevant parts.

Yeah, so maybe it's not me, but you. Please feel free to try to insult me. I think it's funny coming from a guy who, even after I explained myself, continues to try to attack me.

Good luck champ.

I'm not sure I understand your point. The second part (no heaven) is plain honesty and the first part (worm food) is bluntness that doesn't appear to have any counterpart in the situation we're talking about.
