Is that true? If you are alive and lucid, they will just starve you?

That must be why Jeb isn't going to assume state guardianship of Terri. If he does, there'll be a whole rush of people wanting to take up the offer.

Its a pretty dense chunk of legislation, writen in that bizarre language that only lawyers can understand, and the process is tedious and complicated, and a lot of hospital personel have to agree, and they have to give the patient ten day to find a new facility, but it does give the hospital the legal ability to discontinue treatment over the wishes of the patient.

The portion you want is tucked away under subsection 166.046, Subsection (e):
(e) If the patient or the person responsible for the health care decisions of the patient is requesting life-sustaining treatment that the attending physician has decided and the review process has affirmed is inappropriate treatment, the patient shall be given available life-sustaining treatment pending transfer under Subsection (d). The patient is responsible for any costs incurred in transferring the patient to another facility. The hysician and the health care facility are not obligated to provide ife-sustaining treatment after the 10th day after the written decision required under Subsection (b) is provided to the patient or the person responsible for the health care decisions of the patient unless ordered to do so under Subsection (g).

Would a facility actually use this process to discontinue life support for an individual against their stated wishes? I have no idea. I can see a hospital doing this to get rid of costly indigent patients by forcing them to go to another hospital, but would they still pull the plug if they could not transfer to another facility? Regardless, it is possible, and the law Bush signed gives them that absurd authority.
