Was Captain Kirk A Republican?

In fact, I really want this war of words between Cruz and Shatner to escalate so they'll have to fight each other the way that Spock and Kirk did in the "Amok Time" episode with that battle music playing in the background

I'll buy THAT for a dollar!

"Star Trek wasn't political" - BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Non-partisan, maybe. But not political? Not in this universe, Bill.

It would be weird if he was, considering he was a ranking officer in the military of a communist utopia.

Given what the political/cultural situation is supposed to be in the Star Trek universe, I would say that Republicans as we describe them today no longer exist in that timeframe.

Captain Kirk surrendered to a Klingon ship he could have easily destroyed and allowed himself to be imprisoned and tried on charges he knew to be false, simply to avoid jeopardizing a peace conference. I'm hard pressed to think of a candidate on the current GOP ticket who would have done the same.

If pressed, I'd say that Kirk is a Communist, in the ideal, positive sense.

However, I think that Kirk's politics are irrelevant. He's the product of a successful society, and therefore probably embodies whatever values, institutions, and policies have made that society successful. But what we tune in for is his personality, qualities as an individual.

The politics of his society have given him the freedom to focus on things other than politics. And that's what he does. He's too busy exploring deep space, conducting diplomatic relations with inscrutable aliens and godlike beings, boning space women and being a linchpin in the Federation's far-flung military presence, to bother with politics.

So yeah, I'd say he's a Communist, because as far as I can tell, the Federation is closer to Ideal Communism than anything else, and of course a successful member of a successful Communist society is going to be Communist themselves. But I don't think it's really relevant to the story that's being told about Kirk.

Also, I hate it when Politicians try to co-opt a fandom to their cause.

Just as Republicans as we described them in the 1960s no longer exist in this timeframe.

Oh, so, true - and the 2nd reason I do not call the current batch of malicious
thugs and thieves by that name - they do not deserve it and they make it anathema. That's why republickers with the unsubtle touch of evil and repression!!!!!

Good call!

Considering that your usual stupid, idiotic, lying national Republican is the type of person who will start non-necessary wars that will drag on for years while he goes on more vacations than any other President in history.

Even though Kirk is a fictional character, at least he never ordered anyone to do a job that he was not willing to do himself.

It always seemed to me that Kirk = Clinton, McCoy = GW Bush and Obama = Spock. So no, Kirk isn't a Republican but primarily a pragmatist.

And horndog.

The Federation had done away with the death penalty and was willing to spend money on people suffering from severe mental illness ( ST:TOS "Whom the Gods Destroy")

Ted Cruz in a starship captain's uniform with the Gorn captain biting down on his head.

[Dear secret service agents, I was just illustrating how ill-equipped Mr. Cruz was to assume command of a starship. I wish him no harm at all.]

Kirk couldn't keep his pants on around alien females - he tried to screw everything that moved. Definitely a democrat.

Yes indeed - while republickers enjoy boys , little girls and farm animals.....along with the occasional wide stance.

[OT] There's a comment in one of John Sandford's novels comparing Republican/Democrat scandals; the former are mainly sexual, the latter financial.

Even more OT but David Gerrold wrote an alt-hist story where John and Robert Kennedy went into showbusiness and JFK was captain of the Enterprise in Star Trek.

Did Joe Jr. still get blown up?
