So, Kerry decided to get ahead of the curve and stress his military service. Rove needed a response, and the strategy of attacking a candidates main asset had worked for him in the past, so out come the swifties.

No. They popped up during the primaries, when it wasn't even clear who the nominee would be. And O'Neil and Kerry have been butting heads for quite some time.

What's wrong with stressing military service, especially during war time? The guy was running for president, against a candidate who avoided the war he fought in. It's a no brainer.
