VP Picks 2012

Romney seems to be quite assiduous in his attempts to disassociate himself from the W administration. Putting Condi in the VP slot would bring all that horror back into play. I don't see it.

Yes, there's that. She would presumably face questions about her role in facilitating the Iraq debacle. But then, since the entire nation took a pass at asking these questions at the time, even when the bloom had gone off the Bush rose, I don't see why it would become an issue today.

There's also the problem of Condi's positively libertine views on abortion and other things important to the wingnuttery. That's a pretty big stink bomb in the conservative base if he picks her.

All in all, I still think she's the only game-changer in Mitt's VP repertoire. She's his best pick by a country mile. And I don't see her tamping down speculation, so my earlier prediction that she's not interested may be off-target.

I think her connection to Bush would be too much baggage right now. She can probably come back in 2016, depending on how Obama ends his second term and who else the GOP puts out there. If she plays her cards right the next few years and try to emphasize her education, experience and actual political views rather than the administration she worked for, she can be a legit candidate.

After all, W managed to get away from being the son of a 1 term president that was voted out due to a recession. There's even still talk of Jeb being a contender.
 
Veep pick to be announced this week???

According to the NY Times, "Mr. Romney has reached a decision, his friends believe, and he may disclose it as soon as this week."

Smart move, if true. The pressure on other matters (Bain, tax returns) is intense. Time to change the subject. If he's made up his mind, why wait?

I think the sentiments are mutual too. Most ex-W people probably feel no great love for Romney--not that that's a prerequisite for the job, of course.

If not elite in any way is supposed to be a compliment to Pawlenty, then what is one supposed to think about Romney? Isn't that compliment supposed to be a backhanded slap at elitists? It must be in a dissonant portion of the brain where the reality of Romney's utter and total elitism lives.

Do these people ever think about the meaning of the things they say? Or, is it all just bubble-headed sloganeering?
 
Another view. This article says he's in a great big bind.

Another fun issue that it raises is whether Palin will have a speaking slot at the convention. I don't see how the Elephants can avoid it but how do they keep her from making one gaffe after another.
 
Romney is the nominee, and he controls the convention. I can guarandamntee ya Gov. Palin will not be speaking there. The last thing Romney wants is the fresh memory of a rotten GOP VP pick stinking up his coming-out party. Not gonna happen.

ETA: Either way, I predict she'll be the topic of endless punditry.

Ken, I suspect that the folks in the smoke filled rooms behind the scenes in the GOP have a hell of a lot more to do with that constraint. That's a problem he going to have to deal with for as long as he's running, and, if he's elected, as long as he's in office.

FWIW, read a very good book on the assassination of James Garfield (Destiny of the Republic) that takes a decent look at

1) The change in politics between then and now
2) What hasn't changed in politics (the vitriol, at the least)
3) Some underhanded crap that two factions within the GOP pulled on each other, the Stalwarts in particular, both before and after the election. I find an eerie parallel to current events.

Worth a look, and a very good read. It also features AG Bell, and one Doctor Lister.

Ron & Ken talk about the Veep decision and whether Palin will speak at the convention in this week's It's All Politics.

Their opinion is that the announcement will probably come after Romney's impending overseas tour. Palin hasn't even officially endorsed Mitt Romney, so I don't see why he would be inclined to give her a speaking slot.

They both think it's going to be Portman, and that Romney sees Pawlenty as a lightweight ever since he punked him in the debate where he backed down from using the word 'Obamneycare'. They think that Portman would be better in the debate vs. Biden, and Romney sees him as the person most like himself, which is what he wants.
