VP Picks 2012

Wow. So M. Rubio not even being vetted. Why would they leak that or confirm that or whatever? I guess they measured his foot for the glass slipper from a distance, and found him unfit.

I've also seen the T. Pawlenty boomlet. He's the competing boring white guy alternative to R. Portman du jour, with an M. Daniels dark horse run on the back straight.

Oh, and can we call it quits for the H. Clinton suggestion?

Romney plans posh weekend donor retreat featuring Rove and VP hopefuls

Fresh off the best fundraising stretch of his presidential campaign, Mitt Romney plans to spend this weekend strategizing and fraternizing with his biggest bundlers at a posh resort in Park City, Utah.

The presumptive Republican nominee and his senior advisers and aides are hosting two days of policy sessions and campaign strategy discussions at the Deer Valley resort for more than 100 top fundraisers and their spouses. Those who raised more than $100,000 are expected to attend.

More than a dozen Republican heavy-hitters are scheduled to join the private retreat as special guests. According to a fundraiser who is attending, they include some GOP stars thought to be in contention to be Romney’s vice presidential running mate: Rep. Paul Ryan (Wis.), Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Sen. John Thune (S.D.).

George W. Bush strategist Karl Rove, who helps run American Crossroads, the well-funded GOP super PAC, is planning to speak at the retreat, said the fundraiser, who was not authorized to publicly discuss the event and spoke on the condition of anonymity. Rove’s appearance could raise questions because of laws barring any coordination between super PACs and campaigns.

Rubio, Portman, Pawlenty, Christie not among attendees named in the article. No real signal about who the veep pick might be, I expect, but an interesting scoop nonetheless.

Condoleezza Rice.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/dec/18/curl-one-president-please-with-a-side-of-rice/

"America’s first black female secretary of state is quietly positioning herself to be the top choice of the eventual Republican presidential nominee, ready to deliver bona fide foreign-policy credentials lacking among the candidates. The 56-year-old has recently raised her profile, releasing her memoir in November and embarking on a monthlong book tour.

After 2 1/2 years as a professor at Stanford, Miss Rice is reportedly getting “antsy” to get back into the political game. “She’s ready to go,” said one top source."

"...Her addition to the ticket, which wouldn’t come until late next summer, would dramatically change the dynamics of the 2012 election. As a black woman - her family has roots in the Deep South stretching back to before Civil War era, and worked as sharecroppers after emancipation - she would mute Democrats’ charges of racism among conservatives, especially tea party members. And her sex would likely prompt moderate women to take a serious look at the Republican ticket."

I thought the VP should have less mass appeal than the President.
Wouldn't Rice make Romney look like some kind of utter bitch?

Say goodbye to M. Daniels. The Indiana governor has just been hired as the next president of Purdue University, and is getting out of politics altogether.

I refuse to believe the Bachmann is even being considered.

No, but she's just crazy enough to believe that she is.

I would hope that even Romney's not that dumb to really consider her. I could see vetting her to throw her a bone and to hopefully get her to not say something extra stupid.

I noticed she gave a speech after the recent Supreme Court decision and she continues to use the infantile and asinine "Democrat Party" .

Well, ya know Palin was nominated because McCain was told he needed to make inroads with women, and because she would galvanize the far right. Certainly they might think the same thing about Bachmann, who has a lot more Washington experience than Palin. But the problem with Palin was that the "bat-**** crazy" factor drove off the independants. This was because they didn't do a good job of vetting her. It is hard to believe they would make that mistake again. But then, the GOP has surprised me before.

But one thing she said in that interview made me laugh out loud. She never did support Romney until he was the last man standing. She says that she was busy "bringing the party together".

Whenever I hear that Bachmann is being considered as VP, the following commentary comes to mind:

The biggest difference is that Bachmann has been vetted thoroughly already in the glare of public scrutiny. Palin was a complete unknown, and badly in need of the vetting that never occurred. I seriously doubt that a vetting of Bachmann would turn up any surprises.

Of course, what's known about her already knocks her out of contention before the starting bell.

True, she's been vetted. What I really meant was that the GOP would probably not repeat the mistake of nominating a candidate that was bat-**** crazy. Problem is, Romney needs somebody who can appeal to the Tea Party without being bat-**** crazy, and those two things don't seem to be found in one person.

Current odds:
http://www.intrade.com/v4/markets/?eventId=90482

1. Rob Portman 31.5%
2. Tim Pawlenty 19.0%
3. Marco Rubio 9.5%
4. Paul Ryan 6.9%
5. Bobby Jindal 6.3%
6. John Thune 5.2%
7. Condoleeza Rice 3.5% (Bill Kristol recently refloated a trial balloon about Condi, even though she has repeatedly said that she isn't interested)
8. Kelly Ayotte 3.1%
9. Chris Christie 2.6%
10. Bob McDonnell 2.1%

My prediction is narrowed to Portman, Pawlenty, Thune. Of those, I give the edge to Portman, due to his Ohioness.

Rubio isn't ready. Ryan has too big a personality. Ditto Christie, plus he's a loose cannon. Jindal is too weird. McDonnell is Gov Transvaginal. Rice isn't interested. Ayotte is .. well, maybe she has a chance.

That's how I read the tea leaves (so to speak). Especially Christie. After waddling around with an ice cream in his hand and pursuing some constituent, he's radioactive.

Condi near top of list. So says Drudge. So take it with a grain of dumbs---.
